Join the library
The easiest and quickest way to join is online.
Library service membership is free to anyone who lives, works or studies in East Sussex. To join our libraries you can:
- please take proof of your name and address with you
- You will receive an online membership number that will allow you access to our online services
- To loan items and use our public computers, you will need to visit any East Sussex Library to exchange your online membership number for a library card free of charge. Please take proof of your name and address to do so
- If you are unable to collect your library card due to disability or frailty, or because you are caring for someone who cannot be left, please inform us via our online enquiries form
There is no minimum age for joining, but those under the age of 16 need an adult aged over 18 with them in person to agree to be responsible for the items the under 16 borrows and for any charges. A parent or guardian is best.
With any library membership you can:
- Borrow eBooks and audiobooks and eMagazines and newspapers*
- Reserve items from our libraries
- Access subscription websites for free in the online reference library
With your library card you can:
- Access stock and services at any East Sussex Library
- Borrow a range of books for adults, children and young people free of charge, including books in Large Print and books in other languages
- Borrow eBooks and audiobooks and eMagazines and newspapers
- Borrow DVDs, music CDs and audiobooks for a small charge
- Borrow reading group sets, playreading sets and music score sets for a small charge. Music scores and play sets cannot be reserved online. Please ask a member of staff at your local library
- Get free access to computers and wifi in our libraries
- Renew your items up to 5 times if no one else has requested them
- Reserve items for pick up from your local library
- Access subscription websites for free in the online reference library
