Birth certificates

Certificate Ordering

Some of our registers in the Hastings area between 1837 and 2009 are currently undergoing preservation work to protect them for the future.

This does not affect:

  • registers from 2009 to present day
  • registers from other areas within East Sussex
  • marriage registers at places of worship

If we are unable to complete your certificate order, you will be notified and refunded in full.

As an alternative, you can Order a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate - GOV.UK from the General Register Office.

If you are applying for a certificate for a birth which occurred within the last 50 years, you should supply all of the following information;

  • Surname at birth
  • Forename(s)
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Father’s surname (if stated on the entry)
  • Father’s forenames (if stated on the entry)
  • Mother’s forename(s)
  • Mother’s maiden surname

If you cannot supply this information, you may be asked to provide an explanation for the gaps in the information provided, and your certificate application may be rejected and refunded.

Email registrar@eastsussex.gov.uk for advice.
