You can only re-register a birth for the following reasons:

  • To add the name of the natural father to the birth certificate.
  • To show that the natural parents have married since the birth of their child.

To re-register a birth you should make an appointment at a register office in the district that child was born in.

Re-registering is free, but a copy of the new certificate is £11.

  • To re-register after marriage between the natural parents when the father was named on the original birth certificate, one of you should attend with your marriage certificate and the original birth certificate and a completed LA1 form.
  • To re-register to add the natural father’s name when he was not included on the original birth certificate, both parents will need to attend with the original birth certificate and a completed GRO185 form.
