Registering a birth

In line with Government guidelines, face coverings must be worn by all visitors to our Register Offices.

You may be asked to temporarily remove your face covering for identification purposes.

3. How we will contact you

The local NHS Trusts share information with us about all births that take place in East Sussex.

We will use this information to contact you. We are doing this in the order that births took place, so that those waiting the longest will be contacted first.

If we have a phone number for you, the registrar will call you. Don’t worry if you miss the call, we will leave contact details or try again.

If we don’t have a contact number for you, we will send you a letter explaining what to do next.

If you are worried that you may have been left off our list, please send an email to with;

  • The natural mother’s name as shown on the hospital discharge papers
  • A contact phone number
  • The baby’s date of birth
  • Your preferred register office (Crowborough, Eastbourne, Hastings or Lewes)

We will contact you as soon as possible to make arrangements for registering the birth, but please bear with us while we deal with cases in a chronological order by birth date.

See our Privacy Notice for more information about how we use your data.
