Corporate Governance in East Sussex County Council

The Council is responsible for ensuring that our business is conducted in accordance with the law and proper standards, that public money is safeguarded and properly accounted for, and is used economically, efficiently and effectively.

We also have a duty under the Local Government Act 1999 to make arrangements to secure continuous improvement in the way we work. Members and senior officers are responsible for putting in place proper arrangements for the governance of the County Council’s affairs and the stewardship of the resources at its disposal.

We have therefore approved and adopted a code of corporate governance, which is consistent with the principles and reflects the requirements of the framework document ‘Corporate Governance in Local Government: A Keystone for Community Governance’.

It is based on good practice developed within the County Council and the work carried out by the joint working party on corporate governance by the Local Government Association. The working party was sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (SOLACE).
