East Sussex Planning for Health, Wellbeing and Sustainability Framework

The East Sussex Planning for Health, Wellbeing and Sustainability Framework sets out how planning can actively support healthier, more inclusive and sustainable places across the county. The Framework has been developed to provide Public Health information, guidance, and intelligence on ‘Planning for Health’. It brings together evidence and practical considerations to help ensure that local development and decision-making supports:

  • Positive health and wellbeing outcomes
  • Addresses and reduces health inequalities
  • Responds to local issues, needs and priorities – with an emphasis on protecting vulnerable population groups and communities

The framework is structured around five key aspects of the built and natural environment:

  • Neighbourhood design
  • Housing
  • Food
  • Natural environments
  • Transport

Health and Wellbeing determinants are grouped under each aspect with information provided on:

  • Requirements
  • Issues, Impacts and Links to Health and Wellbeing Effects
  • The Opportunities - What the Planning System Can Do
  • Local Data and Evidence
  • National Planning Policy Context
  • Other Key Guidance and Standards
  • Examples - Best Practice/Case Studies
  • Links with Other Determinants

Across these themes, it highlights the factors that most influence health, wellbeing and sustainability, from access to local services, quality housing and green space to active travel, safety, social connection and climate resilience. Designed as a practical resource for developers, planners, public health professionals, decision-makers and communities, it helps guide healthier and sustainable placemaking in East Sussex at every stage of the planning process.
