Extra care housing
Extra care housing is ideal for older people who need care and support but would like to live in their own flat. 24-hour care is provided on site.
Everyone living in extra care housing must have an assessed care and support need. It can be an alternative to residential care.
Flats in extra care schemes can either be rented or purchased through shared ownership.
When to consider extra care housing
You should consider this type of housing if:
- you have health problems
- you struggle to look after your home or garden
- you are considering residential care
- you need regular help to stay independent
- you want to plan ahead for future care needs
What extra care provides
- Your own front door and private flat (1 or 2 bedrooms)
- Fully accessible buildings
- 24-hour on-site care staff for planned and emergency support
- On-site scheme manager
- Community alarm systems and assistive technology
- Facilities such as residents’ lounge, activity rooms, guest suite, hair salon and laundry
- On-site restaurant or café
- Landscaped gardens
- Parking for residents, staff, and guests
- Social activities run by staff and resident groups
Care and support
Care and support services are tailored to your needs. Some people may be mostly independent, while others need regular help.
Support can include:
- personal care (washing and dressing, help with going to the toilet)
- help with meals or medication reminders
- support with daily tasks and mobility
Care staff cannot provide nursing care, such as dressing wounds, catheter care or medication. This may be provided by a community NHS service, such as district nurses.
