Cycle Training at Eastbourne Cycle Centre

1. Cycle training for children

The following courses are offered at the Eastbourne Cycle Centre:

Bikeability Learn to Ride (Beginners Stage 1)

Cost: £20 Duration 45 minutes

When: During all school holidays, usually on the Wednesday. 5 sessions throughout the day.

Beginners Stage 1 sessions are delivered on a 1 to 1 ratio, providing coaching in a safe traffic free environment. The sessions work towards the trainee being able to ride a bike unaided using basic control skills. (More than one session may be required).

Beginners Stage 2 (Formally Beginners PLUS)

Cost: £10 Duration: 30 minutes

When: During all school holidays, usually on the Thursday morning

Beginners Stage 2 group sessions are aimed at individuals who have just completed a Beginners 1 to 1 session and can ride unaided consistently for over 400M (lap of our track), but still need to work on starting off and stopping, and improving their general control. (More than one session may be required).

2. Whizzability Family Fun

This is a fun cycling activity that we encourage the whole family to be involved in. Bikes are available for 2 year olds up to adults. This is delivered as a fun 2 hour drop in session on one afternoon during most school holidays. Staff are on site for guidance. The cost for this is: £5 per child, £2.50 per adult cycling (Bikes and helmets are included) Refreshments available on site (donations accepted)

When: Usually on a Monday afternoon, 3.30pm to 5.30pm and Friday afternoon, 2.30pm to 4.30pm

No need to book, this is a drop in session.

3. Cycle training for adults

All adult training sessions are usually delivered on a Monday but with notice we can often be flexible with dates and times.

Adult Beginners
Cost: £30 Duration: 1 hour

This coaching session caters for complete beginners and for those who may be just a bit rusty, teaching you to learn to cycle independently and providing basic cycle control skills. These include starting and pedaling, stopping, manoeuvring, signalling and using the gears. It is carried out in a traffic free area.

Adult Confidence Builder
Individual Cost: £30 Duration: 1 hour

Group Cost:£25 Duration: 1.5 hours

This coaching session is for those cyclists who feel they require a better understanding of cycling on today’s roads, in order to be able cycle from home to college or work. Training takes place on quiet roads to begin, with real traffic conditions giving the skills and confidence to make these trips safely and independently.

Adult Bikeability Level 3
Cost: £30 Duration: up to 2.5 hours

Develops the basic skills and knowledge for cyclists to make journeys in a variety of quiet and more demanding traffic conditions competently, confidently and consistently.

Fix It Bike Maintenance
Cost: £30 Duration: 2.5 hours

This workshop is for those cyclists who wish to be able to perform basic maintenance on their own bikes, including mending punctures, removing and replacing wheels, adjusting brakes, adjusting gears and generally finding their way around the bike. Workshops can be tailored for the individual or for the family.

4. Become a professional cyclist instructor

We at East Sussex Cycle Training work in partnership The Royal Borough of Kingston as an instructor training organisation (ITO). Whether you would like to make cyclist training your full-time job or you just want to pass on some skills at your local school or youth club, undertaking the National Standard Instructor training is the first step.

Step 1 – four day course

The course covers all aspects of cycle training with reference to the National Standard outcomes and risk management. Participants receive provisional accreditation. The course includes:

  • four day course with two qualified instructor trainers
  • course materials (workbook, manual and model documentation)
  • registration on the National Database

Step 2 – post-course assessment (PCA) within six months of your course

The PCA gives you full accreditation while we observe you working with real trainees where you work.

  • usually takes place over two sessions
  • we support you and agree targets for your final evaluation
