Wealden District Bus Service Improvements
Highlights
Hailsham
- New service 28 to/from Brighton and Lewes via Laughton, every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday daytime. Hourly evenings and Sundays. Also extends to/from Eastbourne on Monday to Saturday daytime.
- New route 48 running on Tuesdays and Thursdays linking Eastbourne, Polegate and Hailsham to Knockhatch Adventure Park and Michelham Priory.
- Route 51/251/252 (Eastbourne-Polegate-Hailsham-Heathfield-Mayfield-Rotherfield-Tunbridge Wells). New hourly Monday to Saturday evening service to/from Tunbridge Wells, which is also increased to hourly on Sundays. Service to be numbered route 51 throughout.
- Route 54 (Eastbourne-Polegate-Hailsham-East Hoathly-Halland-Uckfield) new 2 hourly evening and Sunday service.
- Route 98 (Eastbourne-Polegate-Hailsham-Herstmonceux-Ninfield-Bexhill-Hastings new Monday to Saturday evening journeys. Plus new 2 hourly Sunday service 98 between Eastbourne and Bexhill.
Heathfield
- New seven days a week route 29A linking Brighton, Lewes, Uckfield, Framfield, Blackboys and Heathfield. Hourly, including up to mid evening on Mondays to Saturdays.
- Route 231 (currently Etchingham-Burwash-Broad Oak-Heathfield-Blackboys-Framfield-Uckfield) revised to run locally between Etchingham and Heathfield to an improved frequency. Hourly/2 hourly on Monday to Fridays plus new Saturday service. Connections will be available at Heathfield to/from new 29A for Uckfield, Lewes and Brighton. Route 231 will also serve Burwash, Batemans, on a pre-booked basis.
- Route 51/251/252 (Eastbourne-Polegate-Hailsham-Heathfield-Mayfield-Rotherfield-Tunbridge Wells). New hourly Monday to Saturday evening service to/from Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne, which is also increased to hourly on Sundays. Service to be numbered route 51 throughout.
- New Saturday service on route 225 between Heathfield and Rushlake Green.
Uckfield
- Route 29 (Brighton-Lewes-Uckfield-Crowborough-Tunbridge Wells) Monday to Saturday daytime frequency increased to 30 minutes throughout.
- New seven days a week route 29A linking Brighton, Lewes, Uckfield, Blackboys and Heathfield. Hourly, including up to mid evening on Mondays to Saturdays. In combination with route 29, increases frequency on Monday to Saturday daytime between Uckfield and Lewes/Brighton from 2 buses per hour to 3.
- Route 54 (Eastbourne-Polegate-Hailsham-East Hoathly-Halland-Uckfield) new 2 hourly evening and Sunday service.
- Route 261 (Uckfield-Maresfield-Nutley-Forest Row-East Grinstead) new evening peak journeys plus new Saturday service.
- Service linking to Sheffield Park Gardens and Bluebell Railway (route 246) increased to 2 days a week.
Crowborough
- Route 29 (Brighton-Lewes-Uckfield-Crowborough-Tunbridge Wells) Monday to Saturday daytime frequency increased to 30 minutes throughout.
- Revised route 228/229 to provide a more frequent Crowborough and Jarvis Brook town service, instead of journeys to/from Tunbridge Wells. Journeys to/from Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar School will be maintained. Connections will be available at Crowborough The Broadway with service 29.
- Hellingly– new service 28 for Hellingly Green (Bulrush Lane) to Brighton, Lewes and Hailsham town centre on 7 days a week (half-hourly Monday-Saturday daytime and hourly Monday to Saturday evenings and Sundays). Service 28 to also serve Eastbourne on a half-hourly frequency, Monday to Saturday daytime.
- Stone Cross, Westham, Dittons Wood, Pevensey, Pevensey Bay, Beachlands
- New hourly evening and Sunday service on route 1X (Eastbourne-Langney-Stone Cross-Hailsham-Hellingly Roebuck Park).
- Later journeys on Monday to Saturday evenings on route 8 (Eastbourne-District General Hospital-Sainsbury’s-Langney-Stone Cross-Westham-Pevensey-Beachlands).
- New evening journeys on Mondays to Saturdays and new Sunday 2 hourly service on route 6 (Eastbourne-District General Hospital-Polegate-Dittons Wood-Stone Cross-Westham-Langney) combined with new Sunday 2 hourly service on route 98 (Eastbourne-District General Hospital-Polegate-Dittons Wood-Hailsham-Herstmonceux-Ninfield-Bexhill) instead of current route 54A.
- Route 99 (Eastbourne-Pevensey Bay-Bexhill-Hastings) – Sunday frequency doubled to 30 minutes.
Polegate
- New route 28 via A2270 in Polegate (not High Street and Hailsham Road) to/from Hailsham, Lewes and Brighton plus Eastbourne. Every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday daytime.

Forest Row
- Route 261 (Uckfield-Maresfield-Nutley-Forest Row-East Grinstead) new evening peak journeys plus new Saturday service. All journeys will take the faster and more direct route via the A22 between Forest Row (Brambletye) and Wych Cross.
- Route 270 (East Grinstead-Forest Row-Danehill-Haywards Heath-Burgess Hill-Brighton) new Monday to Saturday evening journeys.
- Route 291 (Crawley-East Grinstead-Forest Row-Hartfield-Groombridge-Tunbridge Wells) new Monday to Saturday evening journeys.
- Chelwood Gate, Danehill – Route 270 (East Grinstead-Forest Row-Chelwood Gate-Danehill-Haywards Heath-Burgess Hill-Brighton) new Monday to Saturday evening journeys.
- Groombridge, Withyham and Hartfield - Route 291 (Crawley-East Grinstead-Forest Row-Hartfield-Groombridge-Tunbridge Wells) new Monday to Saturday evening journeys.
- Eridge Green, Five Ash Down – Route 29 (Brighton-Lewes-Uckfield-Crowborough-Tunbridge Wells) Monday to Saturday daytime frequency increased to 30 minutes throughout.
- Nutley, Maresfield – Route 261(Uckfield-Maresfield-Nutley-Forest Row-East Grinstead) new evening peak journeys plus new Saturday service. All journeys will take the faster and more direct route via the A22 between Forest Row (Brambletye) and Wych Cross.
- Fletching, Sheffield Green – Route 246 to Uckfield to run on an additional day of the week.
- Fairwarp – Revised route 249 to provide a return journey on 3 days a week to Uckfield.
- Buxted, Hadlow Down – Revised service 248 will offer journeys on 5 days a week to and from Uckfield.
- Framfield, Blackboys - New seven days a week route 29A linking Brighton, Lewes, Uckfield, Blackboys and Heathfield. Hourly, including up to mid evening on Mondays to Saturdays.

- Wadhurst – Route 254/304/305 (Hastings-Battle-Robertsbridge-Hurst Green-Hawkhurst-Flimwell-Ticehurst-Wadhurst-Frant-Tunbridge Wells) new later evening journeys plus new 2 hourly Sunday service. Service renumbered to Route 1066.
- Rushlake Green, Cade Street – New Saturday service on route 225 between Heathfield, Cade Street and Rushlake Green.
- Hellingly village, Horam, Maynards Green - Route 51/251/252 (Eastbourne-Polegate-Hailsham-Heathfield-Mayfield-Rotherfield-Town Row-Mark Cross-Tunbridge Wells). Service 231 revised to run between Heathfield and Etchingham to an improved hourly/2 hourly frequency, including a new 2 hourly Saturday service. Passengers boarding at Burwash Strand Meadow, except on journeys towards Heathfield before 10:00 on weekdays, will need to pre-book their journey by calling 01273 078203. Through this new arrangement more 231 journeys will be able to serve Strand Meadow when requested. It will also save time and fuel by making this diversion when there are no passengers to pick up. The route wall additionally serve Burwash Bateman’s during opening times, on a pre-booked basis, by calling 01273 078203. Revised timetable for schooldays only service 331, which will now be operated by Compass Travel and also renumbered 231. |
