Book a birth registration appointment
From 9 November 2026 anyone attending to register the birth must provide evidence of their identity.
Accepted forms of identification include:
- Passport (issued in the UK or overseas)
- UK or EU driving licence (full or provisional). Paper counterpart driving licences are not accepted.
- UK birth or adoption certificate
- PASS card (Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
If you do not have any of the documents listed above, please see the full list of accepted documents.
- All births should be registered within 42 days.
- Birth registration interviews are in person at our register offices.
- Please arrive no more than 10 minutes before your appointment.
- Our offices are small, only those essential to the registration should attend.
- Where the parents are married or in a civil partnership, only one parent needs to attend the appointment.
Birth Certificates
As part of the booking process, you can purchase birth certificates online. Alternatively, certificates can be purchased from the registrar during your appointment.
- Birth certificates are issued once the registration has been completed.
- Copies are commonly required when applying for a passport, registering with schools or other organisations, and for future identity and legal purposes.
- Birth certificates are charged at the statutory fee of £12.50 per certificate.
If you do not purchase certificates at the time of registration, you can order copies at a later date.
