What will the registrar ask?
During the appointment, the registrar will ask you:
- The date the baby was born
- Where the baby was born
- The full names of the parent(s) (including alternative and previous names)
- Parent(s) dates and places of birth
- The occupations of the parent(s)
- The home address of the parent(s)
You must check the registration details carefully and confirm that they are correct before the registration is completed.
A correction to a birth register entry will cost up to £99 plus the cost of replacement certificates.
What should I bring?
From 9 November 2026 anyone attending to register the birth must provide evidence of their identity.
Accepted forms of identification include:
- Passport (issued in the UK or overseas)
- UK or EU driving licence (full or provisional). Paper counterpart driving licences are not accepted.
- UK birth or adoption certificate
- PASS card (Proof of Age Standards Scheme)

Certificates can only be issued after the registration has been completed.
