Certificate Ordering
Some of our registers in the Hastings area between 1837 and 2009 are currently undergoing preservation work to protect them for the future.
This does not affect:
- registers from 2009 to present day
- registers from other areas within East Sussex
- marriage registers at places of worship
If we are unable to complete your certificate order, you will be notified and refunded in full.
As an alternative, you can Order a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate - GOV.UK from the General Register Office.
Order copies of death certificates for deaths which happened in East Sussex, as shown in the map. This excludes Brighton & Hove, West Sussex and elsewhere.
If the death was registered in another local authority you can order certificates here:
Certificates are only available after the death has been registered by a family member or other qualified informant.
Book an appointment to register a death
If your certificate order is urgent, we recommend using our ‘Priority Service’ as detailed below.

| Statutory Service By Post | Order processed within 15 working days. Certificate sent via 2nd class post on the 15th working day. | £12.50 |
- Posted certificates are subject to Royal Mail delivery times in addition to the stated time frame.
- Your certificate(s) will be sent to the cardholder’s billing address.
- For the purposes of Public Protection and Counter Fraud, there are some additional restrictions on applications for the certificate of the death of a child.
