Next meeting |
1. Welcome (new members)
KMa welcomed all in attendance.
2. Review of Previous Minutes & Actions
No matters arising. Minutes from last meeting agreed.
Action 1: ICB are attending this meeting.
Action 2: Have been doing this in the background. Due to the pressure of work and will present at the next meeting in June.
Action 3: GR feedback that a T Level placement is allowed a maximum of 2 placement employers, with one being designated as the lead.
3. ICB: NHS and skills development – discussion item
DH gave a presentation (shared with the minutes)
Discussion
DH we are thinking about geographically based engagement workshops or centred around the anchor pillars or Sussex wide as a whole. Would like to know what the favoured approach would be.
HB you could probably do a mix of both to get the best out of it. You already have a group in place with the Health and Social Care Task Group, which has a healthy distribution list. You have different issues in each area. i.e. coastal communities different to rural and East is different to West Sussexand Brighton and Hove.
LM have wider discussions on the pillars. Will be talking about the same things, but the challenges will be different. It is difficult to find the right people. It gives us the opportunity to work with our colleagues in other areas which will bring us together.
KMa not to duplicate formation of groups. All of us in this group are already involved with other groups around education and health. Things could fall down as other groups may think that it is being discussed with them. There is already a lot of work being done. NHS Sussex could have an umbrella approach under the anchor model.
KB Local Skills Improvement Plan and the work that the Sussex Chambers do - see how it fits to avoid duplication.
KMa thanked DH and suggested that she is invited to future meeting as a key engagement forum.
4. ICB supported placements & T Levels – discussion item
MH and HR shared a joint presentation (shared with the minutes).
MH on fix-term contract until next March funded by Gatsby Charitable Foundation to increase industry placement and to link up with colleges, NHS trusts and private voluntary sector.
Discussion
KMa high attrition rate and is there any understanding why that might be. What are the issues that students are experiencing.
MH largely it is vocation based and people that are focused with staying within health. The data we have is historical and doesn’t break it down into the level of destination details on where students go – linking with the colleges would be a good information resource on this.
JC asked about the Career Signposting event and if linked with the Youth Employability Service in East Sussex, who support 16-18 and who are not in education, employment or training (NEET).
MH/HR confirmed that it is a joint project and for any students who has and interest in health and social care. Advertising will begin in the next couple of weeks. JC can share this further education providers via the Careers Hub.
HB on the slides it said about talking to private care providers. Is it an easier pathway on both ends.
MH contact point to do signposting and getting out there for forums. matt.holmes9@nhs.net for any further queries or questions.
VS asked if working with Wealden Works. VS attending this meeting on behalf of Hayley Gilham and Heather Green. Wealden Works are brilliant with the young people. VS will make contact with them to contact MH.
HR shared information on Widening Participation. HR was previously a Mental Health Nurse worked across trusts in East Sussex. Programme aims to make health and social care sector more accessible as a sector for careers. Target groups 16-25, young NEET and learning disabilities.
Discussion
KB asked if happy to link with resources to provider pages so that it gets the information out there.
LM is there anything we can do to help you with any areas you are struggling to reach. Asked if do any place based reporting, if going into schools regularly.
HR DWP for instance we get contacted directly by individual job centres which is helpful but high administration and trying to prioritise which ones to attend. To use the career resources and the newsletter for 16-25 year olds. Work together on key projects and the support internships. There may be some communication barriers there. Reporting goes internally into East Sussex this can be shared so that we are not duplicating.
For any further queries or questions: Careers inbox: sxicb.ics.careers@nhs.net
5. East Sussex College Anatomage table – discussion item – benefit and sector support
VO shared slides, including video tour of the Anatomage table to run through how they are using it and advancing the way on how we can teach health care to the students.
Discussion
HB asked how the wider Health and Social Care sector can benefit from the technology.
VO keen on using this system to its fullest and to use it as a great tool if people are thinking of coming into the industry. Had a launch event for both students and externals. Students were wary and standing around watching the stimulations. They then wanted to have a go. It was a really engaging piece. Staff came over from the hospital to have a look. It can be used wider and not for just nursing professions.
6. Careers Hub update – HSC Teachers encounters event
Received further funding for two more Teachers Encounters events for Health and Social Care and Digital sector. CPD event for careers lead and relevant teaching staff on a specific sector, giving them an understanding of that sector and jobs/careers pathways within it.
Health and Social Care event: Secured venues Hoarder Centre, Crowborough and two Barchester homes with travel between the sites The flyer has just been circulated to the schools. If interested in running workshops i.e. pharmacy, mental health and midwifes, please contact JC.

7. Action Plan

8. AOB/Date of Next Meeting/agenda items
- Recruitment Hub Project and to share videos at next meeting and aiming to launch in June.
- To invite NHS England on their direction of travel and workforce development in the South East around level 1 and 2.
