Art Fund - Commission Grants Art Fund recognise that there are distinct opportunities and fundraising challenges in realising a commission, and that the acquisition of a commission can be conceptualised and carried out in many different ways; for example, as a unique permanent artwork that can be accessioned into a public collection, or as a temporary, ephemeral or performance piece that may only have a permanent legacy in the form of archival material. For an application to be successful applicants will need to make a strong case in the following three areas:

  • Benefit to the Artist
  • Benefit to the Organisation
  • Benefit to Audiences

Applications towards support for commissions need to demonstrate the impact of the work of art within the context of all three areas above. This programme has two levels of funding available:

  • Main grants: grant requests of above £7,500 and/or where the total cost of the work is more than £15,000
  • Small grants: grant requests of £7,500 or less where the total cost of the work is £15,000 or less

There is no minimum amount that can be applied for. All public museums, galleries, historic houses, libraries and archives in the UK or Channel Islands are eligible to apply. The total cost of the work is deemed to be the overall costs associated with the fabrication and production of the work, plus the artist fee and acquisition cost. Deadlines:

  • Main Grants: There are several deadlines per year. These deadlines correspond to Art Fund Trustee meetings. Please contact the Programme's office at the Art Fund for these deadlines
  • Small Grants: Applications for can be submitted at any time

Before submitting an application, applicants should ensure that they have discussed their application with the Programme's Office to confirm eligibility, deadlines and relevant meeting dates.

DOC SOCIETY Funds Grants in the region of £20,000 are available to support independent filmmakers and artists making documentary projects that would not be commissioned by a UK broadcaster. The Foundation also helps filmmakers in other ways, such as arranging mentoring, offering advice, and additional funding to ensure that films get seen by the right people once they are completed. Deadline: None specified.
