Key Stage 1 Cluster Moderation Meeting 2023
Cluster moderation meetings aim to verify the 2023 Key Stage 1 teacher assessment judgements and ensure that teachers' assessment of pupil achievement in reading, writing and mathematics at the end of Key Stage 1 is consistent across the county. Schools that have not been selected for statutory moderation should send at least one teacher to one of these meetings. These meetings also aim to support teachers with assessment and share good practice.
Training objectives
- To ensure that teachers are appropriately supported to make accurate end of key stage assessments
- To ensure that teacher assessments at the end of Key Stage 1 for reading, writing and mathematics are accurate across the county
- To support teachers to identify gaps and opportunities to improve teaching going forward
- To share good practice

Headteachers, Executive Headteachers, Deputy Headteachers, Heads of School, Teachers.

New to Year 2
This is a bespoke programme of support for newly qualified teachers (NQTs) or teachers new to teaching in year 2, including any teachers who may have taught in year 2 prior to the introduction of the new curriculum in September 2015.
Through a series of meetings across the year, teachers will receive guidance and targeted training, as well as individual support from an experienced county moderator.
Teachers who sign up for the programme will receive: five half day training sessions (three virtual and two face-to-face) and in-school and/or virtual support from an East Sussex county moderator who will provide individual coaching and mentoring. Delegates will also be entitled to a free place on the Preparing for Moderation sessions which will run in March 2023.
Training objectives
- To clarify the expectations regarding statutory assessment and reporting arrangements for the end of Key Stage 1
- To clarify schools' and the Local Authority’s responsibilities with regard to the standardisation and moderation of end of Key Stage 1 assessments
- To assist teachers with making accurate assessments of reading, writing, mathematics and science, and develop effective procedures for gathering evidence
- To support teachers to be able to justify their assessments to a moderator
- To analyse the structure and standards of the National Curriculum tests and the implications for the classroom
- To explore the implications of statutory arrangements on teaching, and develop effective strategies for the classroom
