Independent Travel Training (ITT)

2. Learning Independence For Travel (LIFT) training

The National Star College (NSC) is an independent specialist college working with learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Their LIFT (Learning Independence For Travel) training was developed in 2007 and is a multi-award winning programme currently being commissioned by three other local authorities.

NSC travel train between 30 and 40 young people across the county, with an expected success rate of 80% (young people no longer needing taxis). The team will work closely with schools, young people and their families, as well as the local transport providers; carrying out the full cycle from careful selection and assessment, to agreeing a personalised programme, to ongoing support once independent travel is achieved.

The learners will also have the opportunity to undertake an accredited Foundation Learning Qualification in ‘Travelling’ level 1 or 2 (Edexel).
