Access school transport in September
Starting school travel in September
If your child can get free transport to school, we will send you an email. This email will tell you how to sign up and ask you to upload a photo of your child.
When will you get your email?
- If you applied as a low-income family, you should get your email in early August.
- If you applied in any other way, you should get your email from July onwards.
Follow the steps in your email to sign up for school transport.
If you don’t get your email:

How to get your travel pass
We will post your travel pass to your home in August. You might get:
- A Freedom Pass for bus travel in East Sussex
- A travel permit for our hired coaches
- A Rail Key Smartcard for train journeys
Continuing school travel in September
To keep using public transport, coaches, or your travel pass:
- We will email you and tell you how to sign up again.
- Each year, you must upload a new photo of your child.
- After you sign up and upload the photo, we will send you a new travel pass.
How to get your new pass to continue travel:
We will ask you to check your home address, then we will send your new passes and permits in August:
- Freedom Passes for bus travel in East Sussex
- Travel permits for our hired coaches
If your child travels by train, they can keep using their Rail Key card. You still need to sign up again and upload a new photo each year.
If you need a replacement pass:
If your pass is lost or damaged, you can ask for a new one.
