Could your spare room be a stepping stone for a 16+ teen?

Eastsussexfostering Logo 16Plus

East Sussex needs people like you to support local young people. 16+ teens are at a crucial stage in their lives. They need a stable, shared home environment to help them prepare for living independently. By sharing your home, you could give a young person the security they need to develop vital skills, both practical and emotional.

Helping teenagers can be challenging, but the rewards make it worthwhile:

  • a competitive allowance, paid weekly - £498 to £658
  • training, both online and in-person, focused on teen-specific challenges
  • consistent support from your own local supervisor and East Sussex team
  • a 24/7 advice line
  • organised social events for foster carers
  • a buddy scheme that pairs you with practiced carers with relevant experience
  • the chance to continue working in your current role alongside Fostering 16+

‘House rules’ get discussed together so everyone understands expectations, like keeping their own bedroom clean and tidy and clearing up after themselves in shared living areas as well as learning how to do their own laundry.

Education, training, work and transport

Support young people with course or job applications, homework, and exam revision. Be a contact for college. Help them keep their health and other appointments, and with using public transport. Go with them if they need support, whilst encouraging independence.

Household chores, food and cooking

We recommend shopping together at first. This way, they can see what is available and learn how to shop for healthy, affordable meals. Teach them about kitchen safety and how to cook. Try to prepare food and eat together. You can talk and learn about topics like food allergies. It is important to respect dietary requirements and choices too.

Health

Register your young person with a GP, dentist and optician. If necessary, help them make and attend appointments. Support them to manage any prescribed medication. Encourage them to stay healthy and consider their wellbeing.

Money

At 16+, teens should start learning how to budget. Support them to open a bank or building society account, for things like bills and other expenses. You can discuss the costs of living independently.

Relationships

Build a positive relationship with the young person in your care. If they trust you, they will be more likely to discuss their other relationships with you. This could include rebuilding broken relationships with wider family members.
