Newly Qualified Social Worker

‘Social workers love working in East Sussex because they feel valued and supported.’

Ofsted Report 2024

‘I started my career as a NQSW and am now Principal Social worker for Children Services within ESCC. I have worked for many local authorities in the UK and overseas in Australia and without a shadow of doubt, East Sussex is the best place I have worked. I know. It sounds like a marketing line doesn’t it! But I promise I am happy to back up this claim either by speaking to you directly or at our NQSW evening on 20th March where I will be speaking and would welcome you all to join.

I am passionate about Social Work and working for East Sussex County Council, gives me the stability and means to truly offer a meaningful service to our children.

We possess clear vision, strong leadership and help to create an environment of stability and security for families. We prioritise and focus on the quality of social work practice rather than processes and procedures.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job as Principal Social Worker is seeing a NQSW from previous years who is now a Senior Social Worker or in some cases, an Operational or Practice manager as it shows that the career pathway we put in place works.

Having spent many years working in Social Care, I know that the job can be incredibly rewarding, but also has its challenges. That is why we understand the value of our excellent staff and make sure we focus on real support for our staff. We have an unmatched well-being programme, excellent benefits and a clear and achievable career pathway. We actively encourage and enable our staff to achieve their career goals.

I hope to be working with you soon’.

Nicola McGeown, Principal Social Worker ESCC.
