The Association of Carers is seeking new trustees to play a key role in shaping the charities future.

Role Summary

The overall role of a trustee is to:

Be responsible for the Governance and Strategic direction of the Charity.

General Responsibilities of a Trustee

  • Ensuring that the Charity complies with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Develop and agree a long term strategy for the Charity
  • Agreeing operational plans and budgets ensuring that the organisation applies its resources in pursuit of its objectives
  • Evaluating results, assessing outcomes and impact of the Charity
  • Setting and safeguarding the visions, values and reputation of the organisation
  • Overseeing the work of the organisation
  • Be collectively responsible for the actions of the organisation and other trustees
  • Regular reviewing of the major risk to the charity and ensuring those risks are managed
  • Finding and recruiting new board members to meet the organisations changing needs in relation to skills, experience and diversity
  • Ensure the financial stability of the organisation and the proper investment of the organisation's funds
  • Participate in other tasks as they arise from time to time, such as interviewing new staff, helping with fundraising etc.
  • Informing others about the organisation and its work
  • Listening to the views of the charity’s stakeholders.
  • Handling complaints constructively, impartially and effectively
  • Declare any conflict of interest while carrying out the duties of a Trustee
  • A minimum commitment to 6 hours per month, to read papers in advance of meetings, attend regular monthly Trustee meetings, Annual General Meetings and extra meetings as and when required.

Essential Qualifications needed

  • Understanding and knowledge of the vision and values of the Charity.
  • Commitment to the Association of Carers
  • Knowledge of family Carers needs and issues 
  • Leadership ability, integrity, strategic vision and good/independent judgement
  • Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties as a trustee
  • Ability to take decisions for the good of the organisation
  • Good, independent judgement
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Tact and diplomacy
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Understanding of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee and charity law
  • Management of conflicts of interest and loyalty

Desirable experience

  • Experience of being a family Carer
  • Current or a previous committee/trustee experience
  • Experience of working in Social Care
  • an understanding of working with volunteers


In addition to the duties of all trustees, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This will involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, and providing advice and guidance requested by the board on new initiatives or other issues relevant to the area of the organisation's work in which the trustee has special expertise.

Time required

The role will demand on average a day a month of dedicated time spent on Charity business such as Trustee Meetings reporting on the monthly accounts. Some additional time will also be needed for contact and meetings with the Chair and individual Trustees.


Ineligible people:

Applicants who have the following are unable to become a Trustee:-

  • have an unspent conviction for an offence involving dishonesty or deception
  • are currently declared bankrupt (or subject to bankruptcy restrictions or an interim order)
  • have an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) to pay off debts with creditors
  • are disqualified from being a company director
  • are subject to an order made under section 429(2) of the Insolvency Act 1986
  • have previously been removed as a trustee by the Charity Commission, the Scottish charity regulator or the High Court due to misconduct or mismanagement
  • have been removed from management or control of anybody under section 34(5)(e) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 (or earlier legislation)


Reasonable expenses incurred while carrying out the role will be reimbursed. For example, phone calls and travel, car parking etc. See volunteer expenses policy.


We want our volunteers to learn and grow through their volunteering experience. All our volunteers receive a welcome pack as well as training relevant to their volunteering role throughout the year, for example Trustee skills, Health and Safety etc

Additional Information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
