Apply online for a full Historic Environment Record (HER) search
A full HER search can be undertaken before or after submission of a planning application.
Archaeological contractors or consultants typically request this raw data search to understand the location and extent of known heritage assets (designated and undesignated) as well the archaeological potential of an area in relation to a development.
The results are usually presented as part of an archaeological desk-based assessment (National Planning Policy Framework Paragraph 207).
Before you apply
Before you apply for a full HER search, please ensure you have the following information to hand:
- consultant or contractor details
- site information including a location plan (preferably PDF)
- a grid reference for the site and a radial distance for the search
- a results format preference
- payment details
The cost of this search will be £165 and you will receive a response within 10 to 15 working days.
Priority searches are only available if we have the staff capacity. The cost for a priority search is £254.00 and you will receive a response within 3 - 5 working days. The option will show at the payment stage if we can offer a priority search. If it does not offer the option, then we are unable to offer a priority search at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Please note that from 1st September 2025 provision of PDF maps for commercial HER searches will be withdrawn. The mapping associated with all commercial HER searches will only be provided in GIS format. When completing your search order, please select the GIS option. Selecting the PdF option may delay getting the data to you.
