Rupert has a wide range of responsibilities affecting our quality of life and how we live, travel and enjoy our local environment. The department helps the Council to plan for and deliver ways to improve and make safe our highway network, plan for local development and protect our natural environment, both in our towns and rural areas. Rupert is also responsible for community services such as libraries and registrars, and overseeing the important work to strengthen our customer focus and improve access to services.

Rupert is also lead officer for Transport for the South East, a regional partnership of local authorities, businesses and transport operators. Its role is to determine transport priorities for the region and work with government and other partners to make sure money is spent, where it can deliver most benefit to people and businesses in the south east.

Areas of responsibility include:

  • libraries
  • County Record Office
  • support for the arts
  • registrations of births, deaths, marriages and civil ceremonies
  • customer focus and the customer access strategy for the Council
  • Trading Standards
  • economic development
  • maintaining the roads in East Sussex
  • road safety
  • rights of way and countryside management
  • strategic land use and transport planning
  • influencing public transport integration
  • waste management
  • enhancing the environment
  • emergency planning
