‘No cold calling zones’ can be set up where groups of residents wish to deter uninvited callers.

Street signs, door stickers, information packs and ways of reporting incidents can all help to give residents the confidence to say “no”.

Residents across East Sussex can download and print our Door Sticker [124.7 KB] [pdf].

Place this on your door or window with the warning side facing outwards. It uses the wording of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and can be used by everyone, including people who live outside the current zones.

If you are cold called by a doorstep trader then please call Trading Standards on 0808 223 1133, you will also find the number on the back of the sticker.

Information and advice on doorstep cold callers

Trading Standards receive a lot of complaints from people where cold callers try to get them to agree to have property repairs or improvements

These cold callers may overcharge, do unnecessary work, or provide poor quality services. Always obtain at least three quotes in writing from reputable traders and avoid being pressured into quick decisions based only on lower prices.

Doorstep cold callers simple facts:

  • You have the right to cancel most off-premises contracts and the cooling-off period is 14 days. Traders must give you certain information before they make a contract with you.
  • If you have agreed to the contract in your home, and it’s over £42 then the trader must provide written information about the work, including who they are, what will be done and how much it will cost.
