Community transport in East Sussex
Community transport provides services in areas where either:
- there is no public transport
- you have difficulty using public transport – for example, you are a wheelchair user
Community transport is non-profit and most of those involved are volunteers. It is developed by local people to serve their needs. Services may be provided by different vehicles depending on the needs of the community. Community transport services provide a mix of timetabled services, group bookings and on-request services.

Who can use community transport?
Contact the provider of the service to find out who can use it. Some community transport services are for specific groups but this is not the case for all.
Fares and passes
Most community transport operators set their own fares based on the journey. Routes that receive East Sussex County Council funding will usually follow county council fares offers. Some community transport services need to charge a fare for all passengers including free and discount pass holders to support operating costs. Check fares before you travel.
What is East Sussex County Council’s role?
We work with other organisations to make sure community transport schemes meet local needs. These organisations include:
- local people
- community groups
- operators
- Healthcare Trusts
We provide advice and support wherever possible, but the focus and control of these services remains with the local community.
Volunteering
Community transport relies on local volunteers to help with bookings, fundraising and driving. A few hours of your time could make a difference to your community. Contact your local community transport operator for more information.
