Trading Standards protects consumers and ensures a safe and fair trading environment for all. It does this by interpreting and enforcing a wide range of consumer protection legislation using an intelligence-led approach to inspection, sampling, advice, education and investigation.
An interesting and exciting opportunity is on offer to join the Trading Standards Team, providing team administration and play a vital role supporting Officers in their work. This will include the opportunity to get involved in intelligence and information analysis to enable the team to best focus their activities on areas of greatest consumer harm.
This role will need someone who can provide efficient and comprehensive administrative and licensing support to the Trading Standards team. It is the first point of contact for members of the public, businesses and other stakeholders who have need to contact us. There will also be the opportunity to be involved in overseeing our social media presence and publicity. For these reasons, it is essential to have good communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as a client focus, delivering activities in a timely manner and managing expectations.
The role will also need you to operate our new and innovative database so the ability to use this, accurately inputting and retrieving data as required and ensuring that it is stored securely and confidentially will be essential. The team are continuing to develop their intelligence operating model to better target their resources proactively in the areas where there is most consumer harm and this role will help in enhancing the analysis of all complaints and other information in order to produce reports helping the team to identify these areas. This will include the need to review and understand intelligence reports for which training will be provided.
The role is based at County Hall Lewes but we will provide technology that will equip the post holder to work from home or an alternative office when appropriate. Our flexible working will enable us to consider part-time working or a job share.
The services delivered by the Communities, Economy and Transport department (CET) have an enormous impact on the lives of local people and the natural environment. From operating waste facilities and registration offices, to maintaining roads and major infrastructure planning, the moment an East Sussex resident steps outside their front door, they are interacting with our work. Therefore, roles in our department offer enormous scope to make a positive impact on the quality of life for people and the environment of East Sussex. We are looking for people who can help us to improve the links between the areas we operate in, such as using libraries, improving adult literacy, transporting vulnerable people to the shops to help keep them independent or installing high speed broadband to support businesses to modernise.
The Trading Standards Team uses a wide range of consumer protection legislation, to make sure goods and services sold and provided within the county are safe and legal. We cover a diverse range of areas such as product safety, animal health and welfare, illicit markets, food standards and counterfeit goods. We take action to eliminate rogue trading and protect vulnerable consumers, as well as offering support and guidance to new and established businesses to help them grow. We also vet and approve local traders through our partnerships with Buy With Confidence, and work closely with organisations like Environmental Health, Sussex Police and HMRC to provide consumers and businesses with the confidence they need to conduct business safely and legally in the county.
Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.
From 6 April 2011 the Home Office has placed a permanent restriction on the number of migrant workers that all Tier 2 (General) Sponsors can recruit. Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.
