Headstart residential children's home and SEN school are looking for an experienced Speech and Language therapist  to join our therapy team which includes occupational therapy, SaLT, clinical psychologists, and behaviour specialists.

About Headstart

  • The children in our schools and residential homes have a range of SEN including ASD, ADHD, PDA, SPD, GDD, communication difficulties and complex needs.
  • Headstart provides evidence based therapeutic interventions to support the development of the children in our care.
  • Your role will include completing a range of assessments, writing and implementing treatment plans, producing clinical reports for EHCP’s and delivering a range of training to staff members.

To work alongside the wider therapy team, across the residential care homes and school sites. To provide an integrated approach to speech and language. To complete comprehensive assessments and create and deliver individualised treatment plans for the children in the school and care homes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all students are safe, happy and secure
  • To be take direction from the therapy lead
  • To complete comprehensive assessments as required.
  • To create and deliver individualised speech and language programmes.
  • To review treatments plans and therapeutic interventions periodically, evaluate progress and make changes as needed.
  • To support care home staff and school staff to implement speech and language interventions for all for the children in our residential homes and in school.
  • Ensure all students receive high quality therapeutic intervention
  • To take a holistic approach to each child’s needs.
  • To oversee the implementation of intervention plans by other staff, including providing training and support where necessary
  • To establish realistic goals with the student, with meaningful outcomes
  • To keep up-to-date written and electronic records
  • Complete referrals to refer students to other specialists when needed
  • Manage caseload, with support from the senior staff, prioritising student needs and completing administrative tasks, including student records and plans

Specialist Clinical Work - Complex special needs

  • To complete comprehensive assessment to inform baselines and set goals.
  • To provide direct treatment as indicated by assessment to maximise and promote independence.
  • To provide detailed recommendations which are suitable for incorporation into the student’s education or care programmes.
  • To support and monitor the implementation of recommendations
  • To regularly contribute to reports pertaining to students needs as required. Including writing yearly reports for EHCP reviews.


  • To organise and / or contribute to the training of staff at inset days and staff meetings.
  • To promote by example continuous professional development.


  • To comply with the Royal College of Speech and Language Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
  • To maintain professional registration ensuring adherence to the relevant standards provided by The Health and Care Professions Council.
  • Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with Health and Safety regulations as given by the Young Epilepsy Health and Safety policy and procedures.
  • Have responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Undertake such duties as are delegated by the Headteacher

You will undertake the specified activities listed in this job description taking responsibility for your own workload. In addition, you will undertake any other duties as instructed by the Headteacher or Executive Headteacher.

Additional Information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
