Impact of Sexual Violence and Abuse
Contact | Adult Social Care Training |

Target audience | ESCC Assessment & Care Management / Independent Care Sector, Carers & Voluntary Sector / Safeguarding Adults Board Multi-Agency Training / ESCC Staff / Public Sector Partners (e.g. NHS, Police, Probation) |
Subject | Safeguarding Adults |
Course description | The impact of rape and sexual assault is varied and complex. Individuals react in different ways at different times and in the same way that no two people are the same, each person who has experienced sexual violence will react in a different way. Learning about the impact of rape and sexual assault will help anyone working with or supporting a survivor to gain a better understanding about what they may be experiencing. |
Training objectives | This course helps to challenge myths surrounding expected reactions to rape and sexual assault, and to understand the processes at play that may bring about different responses and reactions, in the moment and afterwards. We will go on to consider some practical ways in which we may respond to survivors, support that is available locally and nationally, and move on to reflect on the impact on us supporting someone who has been through these experiences. |

Developing Professional Curiosity
Contact | Adult Social Care Training |
---|---|
Target audience | All Adult Social Care staff/DPS |
Subject | Safeguarding Adults |
Course description | Professional curiosity is a concept which has been recognised as important in the area of safeguarding children for many years. More recently, Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs) have highlighted a similar need for professional curiosity in safeguarding adults with care and support needs (Braye et al 2014; Preston-Shoot 2017). It is important to remember that curiosity is required to support professionals to question and challenge the information they receive, identify concerns and make connections to enable a greater understanding of a person’s situation. |
Training objectives | To use a range of methods including facilitator input and presentation, small group discussions and activities, practice scenario examples, video clips, individual exercises and whole group discussion to address the learning outcomes. Delegates will be provided with workshop materials with additional resources and references for further reading. |
Learning outcomes | › Describe professional curiosity and outline what it looks like in practice › Explain why professional curiosity is a central component of effective adult social care practice › Understand and apply the knowledge and skills that are needed for working in a curious way › Explore learning from situations where professional curiosity has not always been evident › Plan how to better integrate professional curiosity into practice. |
