Course description This introduction and update to the DoLS is suitable for all staff directly or indirectly involved in registered accommodation, including Community DoLS.   Please note: the legal system for DoLS is planned to change to ‘Liberty Protection Safeguards’ (LPS). This course identifies the main legislative changes between DoLS and LPS. 
Training objectives To provide staff with an overview of DoLS Law and what this means in practice.    The course aims to give an overview of the proposed changes from DoLS to LPS and what this means in practice.
Learning outcomes Recognise and be clear with regards to what a DoLS consists of, what the Law says and how this is put into practice.    Have an understanding of what LPS is and the differences between DoLS and LPS.

Course description This workshop is for professionals who work with children, families, and adults, to learn about the nature of coercion and control within a domestic abuse relationship and have an opportunity to share their experiences.  Staff should complete the 3 Domestic Abuse e-learning modules and the Coercion and Control e-learning module before attending. 
Training objectives These include: 
  • Increased confidence identifying coercive control and understanding it is a criminal offence within a domestic abuse relationship. 
  • Consider the impact on the wider family, including children and supporting victims.  
  • Confidence to complete the Domestic Abuse, Stalking, Harassment and Honour Based Violence Assessment (DASH). 
  • Consider practical steps to reduce risk including useful resources. 
  • Learn the lessons from Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHRs). 
Learning outcomes
  • Explore the law in relation to coercion and control and links to lessons from DHRs.  
  • Consider how to identify coercion and control (including tech abuse). 
  • Links with the Mental Capacity Act. 
  • Understand how to support victims and families to gather evidence effectively and ensuring personal safety.

Domestic Abuse and the Deaf Community

Course description Signhealth are the UK’s first and only specialist service for deaf people who have experienced Domestic Abuse and their families. They offer an opportunity for staff to understand how domestic abuse effects people from the Deaf community. The Signhealth team has qualified Independent Domestic Violence Advocates (IDVAs) who are deaf and use British Sign Language (BSL) and other International Sign Languages (ISL). They use experts by experience to communicate directly with people with lived experience to establish trust and rapport.
Training objectives To raise awareness and increase understanding in addressing domestic abuse within the Deaf community.  To protect deaf people from all forms of domestic abuse using their preferred language. 
Learning outcomes To understand the experiences and fears of the Deaf community with professionals. How to support deaf people who are experiencing domestic abuse. To share accessible resources in BSL to give Deaf people fair access to the same vital information as their hearing peers such as; information about the Deaf Community, resources and information about Signhealth and what support they offer.

Training objectives The Mental Capacity Act 2005 provides a statutory framework to empower and protect vulnerable people who are not able to make their own decisions. It makes it clear who can make decisions, in which situation and how they should go about this. 
Learning outcomes At the end of this session, it is anticipated staff will be familiar with the 5 key principles that underpin this legislation; assessing capacity, making best interest decisions, lasting powers of attorney, IMCAs and advanced decisions.

Learning outcomes The MCA 2005 provides a statutory framework to empower and protect vulnerable people. It makes it clear who can make decisions, in which situation and how they should go about this. This session aims to help staff develop their understanding of implementing the Mental Capacity Act in situations of perceived risk.

  • Be aware of the national and local context of safeguarding
  • Good practice guidance on recording .

It includes Building Bridges, a project that encourages the whole community to care for vulnerable consumers and helps the Trading Standards service protect them.

Course description The impact of rape and sexual assault is varied and complex. Individuals react in different ways at different times and in the same way that no two people are the same, each person who has experienced sexual violence will react in a different way. Learning about the impact of rape and sexual assault will help anyone working with or supporting a survivor to gain a better understanding about what they may be experiencing.
Training objectives This course helps to challenge myths surrounding expected reactions to rape and sexual assault, and to understand the processes at play that may bring about different responses and reactions, in the moment and afterwards. We will go on to consider some practical ways in which we may respond to survivors, support that is available locally and nationally, and move on to reflect on the impact on us supporting someone who has been through these experiences.

Course description Professional curiosity is a concept which has been recognised as important in the area of safeguarding children for many years. More recently, Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs) have highlighted a similar need for professional curiosity in safeguarding adults with care and support needs (Braye et al 2014; Preston-Shoot 2017). It is important to remember that curiosity is required to support professionals to question and challenge the information they receive, identify concerns and make connections to enable a greater understanding of a person’s situation.
Training objectives To use a range of methods including facilitator input and presentation, small group discussions and activities, practice scenario examples, video clips, individual exercises and whole group discussion to address the learning outcomes.
