Background
In July to September 2008 the KITES Family Information Service consulted on ways to improve the advice and information they provide for parents and carers. The survey was completed by 745 parents of children aged 0–20 resident in East Sussex.
What parents said
In the survey, parents were asked various questions about themselves and the information they need. A detailed anaylsis of what parents said is in the main consultation report below. These are some of the key findings:
- Parents want to receive information in pregnancy, after the baby is born and when facing parenting challenges. This suggests an increased need to focus on reaching parents at the antenatal stage.
- The Internet was the preferred way of accessing and receiving information and the most popular choice for parents who would prefer to access information and advice from one place. It was also second, to family and friends, as a place parents currently go or would go for advice and family information.
- One third of respondents were unaware of KITES, and 79% of respondents were unaware that KITES holds information about fun things to do and support groups.
Our conclusions
Actions that have come from this consultation include a need for KITES to:
- increase information about extended schools
- get more information to parents at the antenatal stage
- continue to use and promote the web to communicate with and inform residents
- continue to work to build up a picture of who uses the service
- continue to communicate with residents and allow them to have a say in how KITES develops.
