At registration offices you can hold non-religious ceremonies such as renewing marriage vows, welcoming your child into the family, or remembering a loved one who has died. These ceremonies have no legal standing but let families hold a ceremony for a significant event in their lives.

Naming or welcoming ceremonies
Naming or welcoming ceremonies are a wonderful way to bring the family together to celebrate the arrival of a child. This might be after a birth or adoption, to unite two families from previous marriages, or for couples who want to make a public commitment to their children.
The ceremony often forms the start of a celebratory party and can take place in the registration office, a venue licensed for civil marriages, your own home or other suitable venue.
Renewing marriage vows
Anyone who is already married can choose to renew their vows. These occasions can recognise commitment through the ups and downs of marriage. Silver, ruby or golden wedding anniversaries are commonly celebrated.
Many people choose to marry in other countries and do not have their family and friends around them for the occasion. This ceremony gives couples the opportunity to say 'I do' again in the presence of people who matter to them.
Organising ceremonies
All of these ceremonies can take place at a registration office or licensed venue in East Sussex.
They are conducted by people known as celebrants. They will meet with you before the ceremony to discuss your requirements, and how the ceremony can be tailored to your needs. Ceremonies can include readings and poems by family and friends.
A commemorative certificate will usually be given to you following the ceremony.
