Countryside Access Strategy

The County Council has published Notices under the Local Government Act 1972 with regard their intentions to transfer land designated as Open Space to suitable organisations as part of the ESCC Countryside Access Strategy. Further details can be found in the report presented at the June 2019 meeting of the Lead Member for Transport and Environment.

The proposed new managers are:

  • Ditchling Common – Sussex Wildlife Trust
  • Ouse Estuary and Riverside Park – Newhaven Town Council
  • Seven Sisters Country Park – South Downs National Park

Public access to these open spaces will continue as before. No money is being paid to the County Council for the transfer of ownership and in many cases the new owners would invest considerable sums to protect and enhance them.

Under the ESCC Countryside Access Strategy approved in 2017, the Council broadly determined two approaches to deliver its Public Rights of Way and Countryside services:

  • Public Rights of Way will be managed, maintained and enforced through a retained “in-house” service model
  • Management of our countryside sites will be improved by working to pass most of the sites to other parties experienced in community involvement, conservation and visitor engagement to protect and enhance their sustainability and long-term protection.
