Universal Credit in East Sussex

Universal Credit is a monthly payment that is replacing six benefits: Housing Benefit; income-based Jobseekers Allowance; income-related Employment and Support Allowance; Income Support; Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

Universal Credit is for people of working age who are on low incomes whether or not they work.

Roll-out of Universal Credit in East Sussex

Universal Credit is being introduced in stages.

Stage 1 is already in place across East Sussex. This is for straightforward new claims from single unemployed people who are fit for work.

Stage 2 is where Universal Credit is opened up to most single people, couples and families making new claims. Stage 2 is already in place in the Hastings area. The planned roll-out across the rest of East Sussex is:

  • Rother – July 2017
  • Eastbourne and Wealden – October 2017
  • Lewes – July 2018

There are no plans to introduce Universal Credit for older people.
