Real time information - live bus times

There are several changes to Compass Travel service from 7 January 2019 – see our Bus service changes page for more information.

Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) has been introduced in East Sussex to help provide better, more reliable information about bus services. The County Council worked with neighbouring local authorities and bus operators to introduce the system, which enables live bus times (real time information) to be displayed on electronic RTPI signs installed at a number of major bus stops and also on the Traveline website, text messages and smartphone apps.

Live Bus Times (real time information)

Live bus times are being displayed on the RTPI signs for the following bus companies:

  • Brighton & Hove Bus Company’s services between Lewes and Crowborough and on the coastal route between Brighton and Eastbourne
  • Stagecoach services in Bexhill, Hastings, Eastbourne, Polegate and Uckfield and on the routes between Eastbourne and Hastings
  • Compass services in Lewes, Newhaven, Seaford, Eastbourne, Polegate and Uckfield
  • Renown services in Bexhill, Hastings, Eastbourne and Uckfield
  • Seaford & District services in Lewes, Uckfield, Crowborough, Eastbourne and Polegate
  • North Wealden Community Transport (Wealdlink) services in Uckfield and Crowborough
  • Cuckmere Buses services in Lewes, Seaford, Eastbourne, Pevensey Bay and Polegate
  • Community Transport for the Lewes Area (CTLA) services in Lewes, Newhaven and Uckfield

Live Bus Times – via Smartphone Apps, Websites and SMS Text

Access to live bus times is now available for Brighton & Hove Bus Company, Stagecoach, Metrobus, Compass, Renown, Seaford & District, North Wealden Community Transport (Wealdlink), Cuckmere Buses and Community Transport for the Lewes Area (CTLA) services via either the Traveline South East or national websites, by texting the SMS code for your stop to 84268 or through smartphone phone apps also available at Traveline South East. It is also planned to add live bus times for Hams services to this system later this year.

RTPI Bus Stop Signs

A total of one hundred and six electronic RTPI signs have been installed at some of the busiest bus stops across East Sussex. Twenty eight existing RTPI signs have been upgraded and seventy eight new RTPI signs have been installed, at bus stops in the following areas: Lewes; Uckfield; Five Ash Down; Crowborough; Saltdean; Telscombe; Peacehaven; Newhaven; Seaford; Eastbourne; Polegate; Pevensey Bay; Bexhill and Hastings. A further twenty eight new RTPI signs are expected to be installed across the county in 2017 and 2018.

Audible information – ‘Talking’ Bus Stops

All RTPI signs installed in the county will have the ability to provide audible information about bus services for people with visual impairments. These are known as ‘Talking’ bus stops signs and the audible announcements are activated by a key fob (remote control) issued to partially sighted people by the County Council. The majority of RTPI signs at bus stops in the county are now able to provide audible announcements, and it is intended to make this facility available for all the RTPI signs later this year. For further information about ‘Talking’ bus stops and to request a key fob, please contact us on the telephone number or email address shown below.

Background to the RTPI System

RTPI helps to meet the County Council’s objective of improving the attractiveness of bus services to residents and visitors, so as to increase their usage and future commercial viability. The cost of introducing RTPI across the County has been funded by monies from the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), the Local Transport Plan Capital Programme, Hastings Parking Surplus and development contributions.

To ensure bus users are provided with accurate live bus times the various bus operators provide data about the position of their buses to the East Sussex RTPI system, which processes this data before displaying it on the relevant bus stop signs and Traveline. The bus operators’ data is either supplied from the bus operators’ own real time systems or a neighbouring authority’s real time system.

Future Updates and Bus Travel

Further announcements on the RTPI system will appear on this web page. Information about bus services including, live bus times and a journey planner is available at the Traveline South East and national websites.
