ESCC Emergency Active Travel Fund

To help local authorities to restart local transport as part of the Government’s Covid-19 recovery roadmap, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced a £250m Emergency Active Travel Fund.

The two key aims of the funding are to:

  • enable more people to walk and cycle, and to replace bus journeys where possible and
  • to support safe social distancing in areas where people congregate, such as within town centres, high streets or at transport hubs or bus stops

The types of measures that the DfT require local authorities to consider delivering include; road closures, widened footways, pop up cycle lanes, temporary cycle parking and social distancing signage.

The £250m is being released to local authorities in two tranches. Following an application submitted to DfT on 5th June 2020, ESCC has been allocated £535,145 for tranche 1. For tranche 2 ESCC have been given a provisional allocation of £1.96m and work will commence on the development of this programme once more details of the funding are provided by DfT
