Computers and Internet in libraries

Latest

The ongoing national lockdown means that all of the county’s library buildings will be closed for general use from Thursday 5 November.

However, from Monday 9 November, customers will be able to order books and pick them up from the front entrance of their local library.

Those needing to use library computers to access essential services such as universal credit and Internet banking, will be able to do so from Monday by pre booking a session on 0345 60 80 196 or via our online form.

For more information please visit the Lockdown Response page or contact us directly.

1. Book a library computer

During lockdown please only book computers to access services essential to you, such as accessing Internet banking or universal credit

Where you can use computers

Every library has computers that you can use free of charge. These computers shut down 15 minutes before the library closes.

You will need to book your session before arriving at the library. You’ll be asked to agree to our acceptable use policies.

How to book

  • Online – you can book a session yourself using our book my computer session page. Log in with your library card and PIN. Not all computers and sites are available via this page, so if you can’t find the site you want please call the library service as above.

Children’s computers

There are computers in the children’s areas of libraries. A parental consent form, available from staff at the counter, must be signed before children can use them. Website content is filtered but this doesn’t always block unsuitable material.

  • Children aged 8 to 15 can use the computers on their own but parents and guardians are responsible for what they do on the Internet.
  • Children under 8 years old must have an adult with them when they use our computers.

Things you can do on library computers

  • Free Internet and web-based email.
  • Free access to subscription websites like Ancestry, Find My Past, Theory Test Pro and Encyclopaedia Britannica
  • Software for word processing, spreadsheets, creating presentations, newsletters and editing photos.
  • Save files temporarily to the My Documents folder on the computer – they are automatically deleted at the end of your session to protect your privacy.
  • Open or save files on USB memory sticks, CD-R and CD-RW.
  • Memory card reader for digital cameras, so you can edit, email or print photos. Printing is on standard photocopy paper only.
  • A scanner in each library to scan images or documents and convert existing documents to save/edit in MS Word.
