We will train you and meet regularly to make sure all is going smoothly.

Volunteering roles

  • Bookends bookshop volunteer – serving customers and managing stock at the bookshop in Eastbourne Library.
  • Computer buddy – helping people to use computers in the library.
  • IT for You trainer – helping customers to learn basic IT skills to improve their access to services and employment.
  • Family history volunteer – A great opportunity for a family history expert to share their skills and knowledge with library customers.
  • Rhymetime and Storytime volunteer – Leading Rhymetime and Storytime sessions for babies, toddlers and their parents/carers in the library on a regular basis.
  • Home library service volunteer – choosing, packing and delivering library materials to people who are unable to get to a library easily.
  • Code Club volunteer mentor – helping children to learn computer coding in a library setting.
  • Library customer support volunteer – Providing a warm welcome to all customers, guiding them to the correct area of the library, signposting to appropriate services and helping with self-service machines and photocopying when required.
  • Summer Reading Challenge volunteer – helping children with online registrations, issuing rewards and motivating and encouraging children to complete it.

What happens next

We will contact you within 5 working days to talk about our volunteering opportunities and whether your preferred role is available near you. If roles are full, we will add you to the waiting list.

You will need to provide 2 references for all of our volunteering roles. We may also need to arrange a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) .

We pay expenses such as mileage costs for using your own car for our Home Library Service. We will need confirmation from your insurance company that your car is insured for voluntary work.
