Book award 2017 'The Dog Ray' by Linda Coggin

‘When my death came, it was swift. Swift as a racing horse.’
Twelve-year-old Daisy has just died in a car crash. But in a twist of fate, and through a heavenly bureaucratic mistake, Daisy ends up not where she is supposed to be – but in the body of a dog. Daisy may now be inhabiting a dog’s body, but inside she is still very much Daisy, and is as bouncy, loyal, positive and energetic as she ever was.

Daisy’s only thought is to somehow be reunited with her parents, whom she knows will be missing her. This is how she meets Pip, a boy who is homeless and on his own journey, and a lasting, tender and very moving friendship between boy and dog/girl is formed.

Who do you think would enjoy this story?

I think that anyone can enjoy it. I loved the book and I also know that the writer, Linda Coggin, spent a long time thinking about this story. I know that she wanted kids to see how one book can make you smile.

Tell us what the story is about – but don’t give away the ending!

This is the story about a girl that magically turned into a dog and also made a new friend in this new life.

Who is your favourite character and why?

The dog because I love dogs and this dog was amazing and the dog is a good friend .

Who do you think would enjoy this story?

I would recommend this book to Summer, my friend, because she is into suspense and dramatic stories, and would love the plot of the story.

Tell us what the story is about – but don’t give away the ending!

Daisy is a girl who is in the car until a horse jumps on top of the car and kills her, then she is transported into some heavenly waiting room. Daisy goes out the wrong door and has her new life as a dog. She is eager to find her parents but when she does they don’t recognize her. She runs away and finds Pip, who looks after her and Daisy, in return looks after him.

Who is your favourite character and why?

My favorite character would be Pip because he is such a loving and caring character. He looks after Ray, the new Daisy, so well and is soon connected to her.
