What happens in your first year
You’ll receive training and development in:
- Motivational Interviewing
- risk assessment and analysis
- core skills in communicating and engaging with children and families.
We are a learning organisation providing outstanding reflective supervision, an open door policy throughout the service and manageable caseloads. This is all part of our model of Connected Practice which focuses on meaningful, helpful relationships between managers and social workers, social workers and families, and families themselves.
There’s support and guidance from your team and manager. You’ll also have access to the Social Work Education Team, a responsive and dedicated team of qualified social work professionals who will support you throughout your first year.
The programme includes:
- planned induction to help you make the transition from student to professional social worker
- reflective supervision (weekly and then fortnightly) by an experienced and registered Social Work Manager, alongside our open door policy
- mentoring support and advice from our Social Work Education Team
- protected caseload
- bespoke training offer, graded in complexity over the course of the year
- monthly action learning sets
- a learning agreement detailing the opportunities for co-working and reflective time
- regular progress reviews providing feedback to evolve a bespoke professional development plan
- regular team based group supervision and practice development
- access to latest research through our Single Source website and Research in Practice.
After you’ve completed your first year
Once you’ve completed your ASYE we have every confidence that you’ll want to continue developing your career at East Sussex County Council. In fact, we believe staying here for a minimum of 12 months after completion is vital to consolidate your practice in your second year.
As you continue your career with us, our continuous professional development and guidance will help you embed your practice knowledge and skills. It will allow you to embark on specialist training over the following years.
