We are looking for four Fair Trading Officers to help the Trading Standards Team protect consumers and promote a safe and fair trading environment across the county. The right candidates will help us to do this by bringing their knowledge and skills from either another consumer protection environment or other enforcement/regulatory environment agency.

We will provide additional and continued learning to help the successful candidates interpret and enforce a wide range of consumer protection legislation using an intelligence-led approach to inspection, sampling, advice and education and investigation. Other aspects of the role will include assisting colleagues in tackling unfair and unsafe trading practices through enforcement, advice and education.

Ideally you will be a self-motivated person willing to undertake further learning leading to a recognised trading standards qualification. Some transferrable skills will be essential as well as knowledge of the consumer protection environment. You will have excellent customer service and communication skills, be thorough in your approach and a team player. You will be supported to become a valuable contributor to the team with specific trading standards qualifications and personal development as necessary.

This is a unique opportunity for the right people to develop the skills and experience needed to have a professional career within the field of Trading Standards.

The services delivered by the Communities, Economy and Transport department (CET) have an enormous impact on the lives of local people and the natural environment. From operating waste facilities and registration offices, to maintaining roads and major infrastructure planning, the moment an East Sussex resident steps outside their front door, they are interacting with our work. Therefore, roles in our department offer enormous scope to make a positive impact on the quality of life for people and the environment of East Sussex. We are looking for people who can help us to improve the links between the areas we operate in, such as using libraries, improving adult literacy, transporting vulnerable people to the shops to help keep them independent or installing high speed broadband to support businesses to modernise.

The Trading Standards Team uses a wide range of consumer protection legislation, to make sure goods and services sold and provided within the county are safe and legal. We cover a diverse range of areas such as product safety, animal health and welfare, illicit markets, food standards and counterfeit goods.

We take action to eliminate rogue trading and protect vulnerable consumers, as well as offering support and guidance to new and established businesses to help them grow. We work closely with organisations like Environmental Health, Sussex Police and HMRC to provide consumers and businesses with the confidence they need to conduct business safely and legally in the county.
