East Sussex County Council’s Flood Risk Management Team is recruiting for two roles: Flood and Land Drainage Officer and Flood Risk Management Officer. These cover the investigation of land drainage issues and flood events. The roles focus on meeting the County Council’s obligations under the Land Drainage Act and the Flood and Water Management Act, by processing applications for watercourse consent, investigating and resolving non-consented works and, when necessary, undertaking enforcement action, responding to enquiries from the public and investigating flood incidents.

The successful candidate will require a range of skills and abilities including an understanding of how the various agencies and organisations involved in the management of water interact with each other, a good knowledge of drainage techniques and a demonstrable ability to deal with members of the public with tact, diplomacy, and empathy.

In addition to this, the post holder will contribute to the team’s response to major planning applications by advising colleagues on impacts of development proposals on drainage systems and the need for consent under the Land Drainage Act. Negotiations with land owners, the Highway Authority and other agencies will feature in this aspect of the role and so a familiarity with the planning system and the development process would be advantageous.

We would expect the post holder to operate at a high level of autonomy and independence and be capable of engaging in other projects and work streams within the team.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.

Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.
