Adopting a Whole Family Approach to Domestic Abuse and Promoting Safety - Professional Level Workshop
This popular course is essential for practitioners from Children's Services and Adult Social Care, education, early help, the police and health to review, update and consolidate core knowledge about domestic abuse.
This two full day ‘professional level’ workshop is part of the domestic abuse thematic learning pathway and will give an overarching and updated view on current research, theory and practice in the field. It is relevant for all East Sussex Children's Services practitioners working with children, young people and families assessed as level 3 or 4 on the Continuum of Need.
Participants must complete the 3 domestic abuse eLearning modules prior to attending the course.

Adultification of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Communities - Addressing Barriers to Safeguarding Children Effectively & Appropriately
This Teams event will provide practitioners with an awareness of what Adultification in children is and how it affects their journey. Practitioners will have the opportunity to consider their own unconscious bias and stereotypes and how to address them and challenge these. The importance of establishing anti-racist & anti-discriminatory practices will also be explored.
Who can attend this course?
East Sussex Safeguarding Children Partnership training is for all professionals and volunteers who work with children or adults who have children or child care responsibilities. Child and Adolescent Development
This training, reviews child and adolescent development including the neuroscience specific to this group. An overview of influencing factors which impacts on child development will be examined including genetic, environmental, cultural and social factors, parenting styles, physical or emotional difficulty and resilience. The training will;
- Refresh understanding of child and adolescent development with specific reference to key developmental theories.
- Explore the latest research findings relating to neuroscience and child development.
This workshop is relevant for all practitioners working with families antenatally or families with children and young people.

Contextual Safeguarding: Understanding, and responding to, young people’s experiences of significant harm beyond their families
This face to face classroom course, will enable participants to understand the meaning of Contextual Safeguarding and how we are responding to the issue within East Sussex. Participants will gain an understanding of the theory of contextual assessment and the links between children at risk of exploitation and how contextual approaches will support and enhance traditional safeguarding approaches.

Fabricated Induced Illness, Identifying and Managing Safeguarding Concerns
This training course will enable participants to assess risk and to explore inter-agency responses to concerns regarding Fabricated Induced Illnesses, (historically known as Munchhausen Syndrome by Proxy).
The course will cover making and/or receiving referrals regarding child care and child protection issues in relation to Fabricated Induced Illness. Participants will learn about procedures when responding to Fabricated Induced Illnesses, the importance of early identification and detailed chronologies when Fabricated Induced Illness is suspected, and histories of Fabricated Induced Illness from the victim's perspective.
Who can attend this course?
All staff from Children"s Social Care, Education, Schools, Early Years, PVI (Private, Voluntary Independent), Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Mental Health Teams and Youth Offending Teams, who are working with children and families or staff from Adult Social Care/Mental Health working with adults who have children.

Would you like to increase your knowledge and understanding of this complex area of Safeguarding? Do you feel confident in challenging certain practices whilst trying to remain sensitive and respectful to cultural and religious traditions?
This important multi-agency course is being presented by a very experienced external trainer, who has worked closely with local authorities and police forces to combat these behaviours and can bring personal knowledge to this training event. The sessions are spread over four hour time frame with time for breaks.
This course aims to increase the knowledge, awareness, and understanding of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Breast Ironing and to enable multi-agency practitioners to more confidently identify and safeguard those children at risk.

Holding Difficult Conversations with Families - Workshop for Practitioners
These new format courses will support staff who work directly with families to be more confident and capable when holding difficult conversations.
Participants will be introduced to a new set of practice principles that have been designed by East Sussex practitioners and consider how to integrate holding difficult conversations with families with Solution Focus and Motivational Interviewing techniques.
The training objectives for this course are for participants to:
- Explore principles on holding difficult conversations with families.
- Consider how to integrate holding difficult conversations with families with Solution Focus and Motivational Interviewing techniques.
- Reflect on the “contract” between practitioners and service users, to include managing difference.
- Explore communication skills – how are we when in conflict and ideas for maintaining a resilient, empathetic, clear approach?
Practice techniques for responding to difficult conversations to include:
- Self-talk and “convenient beliefs” for keeping calm and focus on successful outcomes under stress
- giving bad news using danger/worry statements
- learn about mediation techniques such as speaking to people’s needs rather than their positions
practice non-violent communication techniques for maintaining relationships in conflict.

Identifying the Sexual Abuse of Children
This course, will enable participants to identify child sexual abuse, understand the legal context, and to consider factors that make children and their families vulnerable to sexually abusive behaviour and gain a better understanding of how they can manage disclosures of child sexual abuse.

Perinatal Mental Health: Advanced Workshop
This is an advanced Children’s Workforce workshop for Health Visitors, Community Nursery Nurses and other interested 0-5's and 5-19's practitioners, who should access when relevant to their caseload.
It provides an opportunity to learn about the significance of mental health within the perinatal period; the impact it has on the mother, infant, family and society;and why all service providers should to be aware of perinatal mental health and know how to respond.

Parental Mental Health: Supporting Wellness, Recovery and Access to Services
This half day workshop will enable you to increase your competence in talking with adults about mental health issues. This will include challenging conversations about subjects such as self-harm and suicide, using screening tools to help assess a person’s mental health and identify positive interventions.
This workshop is relevant for all East Sussex Children's Services practitioners working with children, young people and families assessed as level 3 or 4.
During this course you will;
- Learn about how to have constructive and effective conversations with adults who are experiencing mental health issues. Understand the impact of stigma associated with mental health.
- Learn how to use common screening tools PHQ9 and GAD7 to help screen anxiety and depression.
- Learn about appropriate intervention and/or referral pathways based on level of need.
- Practice how to have difficult conversations about mental health including suicide and self-harm.

Safeguarding Issues in an LGBTQ Context: Domestic Abuse, Exploitation, Substance Misuse and Sexual Health

Suicide Awareness - Working with Children and Young People (Under 16yrs old) (Virtual)
These introductory awareness courses will equip professionals working with families to pick up on vulnerabilities, identify who might be at risk and start an open conversation about suicide, as this is one of the best way we know to prevent suicide.

Suicide Awareness - Suicide Awareness -Working with Young People (16+) and Adults (Virtual)
This introductory awareness course will equip professionals working with those 16+, Adults and their families to pick up on vulnerabilities, identify who might be at risk and start an open conversation about suicide, as this is one of the best ways we know to prevent suicide.

Trauma-Informed approaches to working with Families in a Multi Professional Context: Foundation Level
Are you working with individuals who find it challenging to engage with conventional services or offers of help? Ever asked yourself “what has happened to them” rather than “what is wrong with them?” Then this course is for you.
Trauma informed approaches are strength based and recognise that past experiences, relationships, intersectionality, and context affect current ways of being, relationships and interactions. The Trauma informed lens reframes behaviour that has been traditionally seen as “resistant, difficult, challenging or problematic” as individuals’ best attempts at coping and surviving. In this context it is understandably that the relationships practitioners build with people to promote safety, is emotional work, that inevitably impacts upon them.
This multi agency face to face course is facilitated by highly experienced practitioners working in a range of settings including mental health, children’s social care and university and in consultation with Recovery Partners (Experts by Experience).
Who can attend this course?
This multi agency training ran by the East Sussex Safeguarding Children Partnership, can be accessed by any professional who works with children and families in East Sussex.
A maximum of three representatives from each team may have a confirmed place and further bookings will be put on a wait list.

Participants must complete the Introduction to Trauma informed Practice ahead of the course date and read the booklet that will be e-mailed to you.

Working with Trans and Gender Questioning Children and Young People
This half day professional level workshop that provides an insight into the lives of trans and gender questioning children and young people, as well as gaining information on trans identities more generally.
The course aims to increase practitioners confidence in supporting young trans people to develop a strong sense of identity in the face of marginalisation. You will learn practical ways to make our services more safe and inclusive.
By the end of this workshop you will be able to:
- Consider different identities and the intersection of assigned sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation.
- Be aware of the laws which protect trans people and how this relates to your practice.
- Have increased awareness of the challenges trans children and young people face and find ways to develop practice to support young people in your service.
- Be more aware of any possible barriers a trans child or young person may face in your service and be able to implement or encourage developments to help your service become more inclusive.
Participants must complete the Trans Awareness Foundation Module e-learning prior to undertaking this workshop.

Working with Parents Effectively - Enabling & Supporting Staff to deal with difficult or evasive behaviour
By the end of the course participants will have identified forceful counter-arguments as a form of disguised compliance and how this the impact of themselves and their practice.
They will also better understand the possible motivations behind parents who disguise their level of commitment and how they could from better working partnerships with such parents.
Who can attend this course?
This course is relevant for any professional who works directly with children and their families and/or those who have a lead role in Safeguarding and Child Protection, e.g., DSLs in schools and nurseries.
All agencies and levels of staff can attend but this course is not relevant for Adult Social Care colleagues, unless they work within a Transition Service, with young people aged 16-18.

Young People and Abusive Relationships
The training focuses on domestic abuse, both experienced and perpetrated by young people in their intimate partner relationships. The training will explore ways in which to engage young people and their families, consider and use strategies, interventions, tools and resources available to practitioners in East Sussex when working with young people and their families who are experiencing violence and abuse.
This course is appropriate for practitioners who wish to improve their knowledge base and practical skills when working with young people who are experiencing abuse within their relationships. It is not suitable for practitioners who are very experienced in these areas or who have already completed the two classroom courses relating to Young people and Abusive Relationships within the last 3 years.
Who can attend this course?
This multi agency training, ran by the East Sussex Safeguarding Children Partnership, can be accessed by any professional who works with children and families in East Sussex. This includes ASC staff who work in the Transition Service.
Additional information
Participants must complete the 3 domestic abuse eLearning modules prior to attending the course. It is also desirable that attendees have also completed the 2 day "Whole Family Approach to Domestic Abuse" training.
