Attachment Based Practice with Families, Part 1- infancy, early childhood and the school years (Virtual)
This live interactive virtual course, delivered over three days via Teams, forms the foundation level of a programme of training on 'Attachment Based Practice with Families'. Practitioners who have attended the previous Application of Attachment Theory course are eligible to book directly on to the second part of the programme: 'Attachment Based Practice with Families, Part 2 - Adolescence, Adulthood and the Family System'.
This Part 1 course focuses on infancy and early childhood, moving up to the school years. It introduces contemporary attachment theory, its links with child development, neurobiology and the emerging field of narrative medicine. The latter part of the training day is set aside for independent study.
Attachment theory is essential for understanding how human beings function in relationships and how people develop social and psychological difficulties. It is also fundamental for understanding what constitutes psychological wellbeing.
The focus of the training programme is to translate the theory into principles, tools and practical strategies for working with families. Exploration of relevant case examples enables participants to move from assessment to formulation to planning and intervention. The training is designed to increase the confidence of practitioners to
act as change agents and to understand and relate to people in an attuned way.
Important Information
Delegates will be asked to bring case materials to the later sessions. Course timings allow for the latter part of the training day following a teaching session (14.30 - 16.30) to be used for independent reading and reflection.

Attachment Based Practice with Families, Part 2 - Adolescence, Adulthood and the Family system (Virtual)
This live interactive virtual course, delivered over five sessions, is a professional/advanced level of training on 'Attachment Based Practice with Families’, focusing on attachment-based practice with adolescents and adults. It replaces the previous 'Introduction to Attachment Based Practice with Adults' course. It is aimed at case-holding practitioners.
You must complete 'Attachment Based Practice with Families, Part 1- infancy, early childhood and the school years' or have completed the previous 'Application of Attachment Theory' course before attending this course. Following Days 1 and 2 participants will undertake a piece of assessment work in preparation for Day 3.
Attachment theory is essential for understanding how human beings function in relationships and how people develop social and psychological difficulties. It is also fundamental for understanding what constitutes psychological wellbeing. The focus of the training programme is to translate the theory into principles, tools and practical strategies for working with families. Exploration of relevant case examples enables participants to move from assessment to formulation to planning and intervention.
The training is designed to increase the confidence of practitioners to act as change agents and to understand and relate to people in an attuned way. Time has been built into the sessions for reading and reflection alongside the teaching hours.
As with Part 1 of the course, sessions 1 to 3 of Part 2 focus on translating the theory into principles tools and practical strategies for understanding the functioning of adolescents and adults in families. It utilises chapters 1-8 of the course text, ‘Attachment-based Practice with Adults’ by Clark Baim and Tony Morrison. Sessions 4 and 5 focus on taking understanding of the difficulties and strengths of individual family members and developing an attachment informed understanding of family functioning.

Court Work Skills
This face to face course includes an overview of legal principles and procedure, relevant to working as a social worker in the family court. The course is led by barristers from 1 Crown Office Row who will share their top tips for social workers when called to give evidence in court.
There will be information about the different orders available to the court, and how the social worker’s written and oral evidence can best assist the court to make the right decision for the child.
The afternoon will focus on a mock trial of an application for an interim care order, and candidates will have an opportunity to role-play being cross-examined as the social worker giving evidence to the court. The training will be delivered in the Council Chamber at County Hall to simulate a courtroom as closely as possible.
Communicating effectively within this context is crucial and this course provides an opportunity to practice oral evidence giving in court in a safe and supportive environment.
Important Information
Participants will be sent materials to read before the training, including a mock trial bundle which may have similarities to real cases and therefore must be treated as confidential and not for public circulation.

De-escalation and Diffusion: Working with difficult and dangerous behaviours
This training demonstrates issues and behaviours presented by adults who maybe difficult, dangerous and evasive (DDE) or present any combination of these three. The issues and behaviours of DDE people will be integrated throughout the training.
This course is aimed at practitioners in children’s services who are working with difficult, dangerous and evasive behaviours. It will provide delegates and their team with the skills, tools and resources to prepare for any of the situations.
The day of this course involves role play, this includes filming the delegates when they are put in a difficult, dangerous or evasive situation and how they respond to this situation, then after they reflect on their behaviour. This course is delivered by facilitators who will bring their first-hand experience and tailor the course to suit your learning needs.

Effective Supervision – Developing supervisory skills and reflective practice
Please note that this replaces the previous Developing Effective Supervision course.
Effective Supervision is a two day course focussing on the development of supervisory skills for effective practice, with a particular focus on reflection as a key tool within the complex context of today’s social care.
The learning outcomes for the course are for participants to:
- Explore what constitutes effective supervision, its research base, and its relationship to safe practice and positive outcomes for service users.
- Understand the functions of supervision, and how different functions Consider the integrated (4 x 4 x 4) model of supervision and the impact of good supervision on the whole system and organisation.
- Explore styles of supervision, the impact of authoritative supervision on outcomes, and the challenges of the use of authority in practice.
- Consider the importance of relationships in supervision, and the parallels between supervisory practice and connected practice. To consider how past experience of supervision can impact on present relationships, and to consider how attachment styles can impact on supervisory dynamics.
- Explore how our ‘Social Graces’ impact on the supervisory relationship, including race, ethnicity and neurodivergence. To recognise the impact of racism and discrimination, and the promotion of anti-oppressive practice in supervision.
- Use the supervision agreement to support and review the effectiveness of supervision and the supervisory relationship. Use the supervision cycle, and understand how it can be used as a model to facilitate effective reflection, and analysis of practice.
- Use a range of reflective tools to enhance thinking, professional judgement and risk assessment.
Understand the importance of recording supervision. - Consider how emotions and psychological defences may impact on staff, critical thinking and decision making, and in particular to consider how anxiety can affect individual staff and organisational systems.

Genogram Workshop for Family Keyworkers
This half day workshop will enable keyworkers to learn about Genograms and use them confidently when working with families with complex histories.
A genogram, if used well, is a helpful tool that can be used as part of the ‘Listen and Understand’ section of Early Help Planning. Use of genograms assists in developing greater insight into historic traumatic events and the impact these may be having on current relationships in families.
Families that have experienced complex trauma events may have significant difficulties creating and maintaining healthy relationships, both within and outside of the family home. By taking a whole family approach when working with children and young people, we endeavour to view the presenting problem within the context of the whole family system. This does not mean necessarily working with every family member, but rather taking account of the wider family system.

Holding Difficult Conversations with Families - Workshop for Practitioners
These new format courses will support staff who work directly with families to be more confident and capable when holding difficult conversations.
Participants will be introduced to a new set of practice principles that have been designed by East Sussex practitioners and consider how to integrate holding difficult conversations with families with Solution Focus and Motivational Interviewing techniques.
The training objectives for this course are for participants to:
- Explore principles on holding difficult conversations with families.
- Consider how to integrate holding difficult conversations with families with Solution Focus and Motivational Interviewing techniques.
- Reflect on the “contract” between practitioners and service users, to include managing difference.
- Explore communication skills – how are we when in conflict and ideas for maintaining a resilient, empathetic, clear approach?
Practice techniques for responding to difficult conversations to include:
- Self-talk and “convenient beliefs” for keeping calm and focus on successful outcomes under stress
- giving bad news using danger/worry statements
- learn about mediation techniques such as speaking to people’s needs rather than their positions
practice non-violent communication techniques for maintaining relationships in conflict.

Motivational Interviewing Foundation (virtual)
This 12 hour course in a live interactive virtual classroom will give you a practical understanding of Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills and principles. When used, these tools aim to strengthen somebody’s motivation and confidence, to promote positive change within them and to help develop the skills to cope with life challenges. Motivational Interviewing Advanced Skills (virtual)
This live interactive virtual Motivational Interviewing Advanced Skills assessed and certificated course, delivered over four days, is for practitioners who have completed the foundation course to expand and enhance their Motivational Interviewing skills. On successful completion of the course participants will be awarded a Certificate in Motivational Interviewing verified by the National Centre for Behaviour Change. The course is comprised of four half day sessions and a follow up mentoring session arranged directly with the trainer.

Risk Assessment and Analysis (virtual)
This live, interactive, virtual classroom training, delivered on Zoom, will support practitioners to undertake high quality, child centred assessments that are informed by evidence and focused on achieving best outcomes for children.
Delegates are also expected to attend an in-house half day follow up session to explore how they have applied the learning in practice. The half day follow up session will be provided at a later date.

Understanding Adult Attachment within Supervision
This 2 day face to face training focuses on chapter 10 from 'Attachment Based Practice with Adults' by Clark Baim and Tony Morrison, which addresses attachment-based supervision. You will need to complete an exercise (audio record a supervision session and listen to it) between the two sessions.
Day 1:
- Introduction to the DMM model of Attachment and Adaptation.
- Refresher on the Morrison 4x4x4 model of supervision and introduction to how Kolb’s reflective learning cycle relates to the DMM.
- Use of case studies to illustrate Type A, C and B supervision and exploration of its strengths and weaknesses.
- Supervision History exercise reflecting on past and current experience of supervision as a supervisee and supervisor.
Homework task: Practice giving attachment based supervision, audio record 1 supervision session, listen to it and reflect on it ready for follow up session (using questions provided)
Day 2:
- Paired exercise to reflect on learning from experience.
- Use of case studies to practice skills in supervising a worker with tendencies towards Type A and Type C.

Safeguarding & Child Protection
Adultification of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Communities - Addressing Barriers to Safeguarding Children Effectively & Appropriately
This Teams event will provide practitioners with an awareness of what Adultification in children is and how it affects their journey. Practitioners will have the opportunity to consider their own unconscious bias and stereotypes and how to address them and challenge these. The importance of establishing anti-racist & anti-discriminatory practices will also be explored.

Child and Adolescent Development
This training, reviews child and adolescent development including the neuroscience specific to this group. An overview of influencing factors which impacts on child development will be examined including genetic, environmental, cultural and social factors, parenting styles, physical or emotional difficulty and resilience. The training will;
- Refresh understanding of child and adolescent development with specific reference to key developmental theories.
- Explore the latest research findings relating to neuroscience and child development.
This workshop is relevant for all practitioners working with families antenatally or families with children and young people.

Contextual Safeguarding: Understanding, and responding to, young people’s experiences of significant harm beyond their families
This face to face classroom course, will enable participants to understand the meaning of Contextual Safeguarding and how we are responding to the issue within East Sussex. Participants will gain an understanding of the theory of contextual assessment and the links between children at risk of exploitation and how contextual approaches will support and enhance traditional safeguarding approaches.

Fabricated Induced Illness, Identifying and Managing Safeguarding Concerns
This training course will enable participants to assess risk and to explore inter-agency responses to concerns regarding Fabricated Induced Illnesses, (historically known as Munchhausen Syndrome by Proxy).
The course will cover making and/or receiving referrals regarding child care and child protection issues in relation to Fabricated Induced Illness. Participants will learn about procedures when responding to Fabricated Induced Illnesses, the importance of early identification and detailed chronologies when Fabricated Induced Illness is suspected, and histories of Fabricated Induced Illness from the victim's perspective.
Who can attend this course?
All staff from Children"s Social Care, Education, Schools, Early Years, PVI (Private, Voluntary Independent), Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Mental Health Teams and Youth Offending Teams, who are working with children and families or staff from Adult Social Care/Mental Health working with adults who have children.

This important multi-agency course is being presented by a very experienced external trainer, who has worked closely with local authorities and police forces to combat these behaviours and can bring personal knowledge to this training event. The sessions are spread over four hour time frame with time for breaks.
This course aims to increase the knowledge, awareness, and understanding of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Breast Ironing and to enable multi-agency practitioners to more confidently identify and safeguard those children at risk.

Managing Allegations Against Staff
On this course participants will look at methods to effectively manage the process of an allegation against a colleague or themselves.

Personal Safety (Virtual)
This is a live interactive virtual course, delivered through Zoom. Aimed at Social Workers and Early Help practitioners, who have priority for this course.
This bespoke course is designed to raise awareness of risks staff may face while lone working and give you tools you need to minimise these risks. By the end of the course, delegates will have a greater understanding of potential risks and feel more confident in managing their personal safety and conflict situations.

Professional Curiosity and Professional Challenge within a Safeguarding Context
A multi-agency training session for safeguarding professionals to consider the approach to working with children, their families and other agencies to ensure the best possible outcomes in terms of well-being and safety. Working with Parents Effectively - Enabling & Supporting Staff to deal with difficult or evasive behaviour
By the end of the course participants will have identified forceful counter-arguments as a form of disguised compliance and how this the impact of themselves and their practice.
They will also better understand the possible motivations behind parents who disguise their level of commitment and how they could from better working partnerships with such parents.
Who can attend this course?
This course is relevant for any professional who works directly with children and their families and/or those who have a lead role in Safeguarding and Child Protection, e.g., DSLs in schools and nurseries.
All agencies and levels of staff can attend but this course is not relevant for Adult Social Care colleagues, unless they work within a Transition Service, with young people aged 16-18.

Young People and Abusive Relationships
The training focuses on domestic abuse, both experienced and perpetrated by young people in their intimate partner relationships. The training will explore ways in which to engage young people and their families, consider and use strategies, interventions, tools and resources available to practitioners in East Sussex when working with young people and their families who are experiencing violence and abuse.
This course is appropriate for practitioners who wish to improve their knowledge base and practical skills when working with young people who are experiencing abuse within their relationships. It is not suitable for practitioners who are very experienced in these areas or who have already completed the two classroom courses relating to Young people and Abusive Relationships within the last 3 years.

This multi agency training, ran by the East Sussex Safeguarding Children Partnership, can be accessed by any professional who works with children and families in East Sussex. This includes ASC staff who work in the Transition Service.
Additional information
Participants must complete the 3 domestic abuse eLearning modules prior to attending the course. It is also desirable that attendees have also completed the 2 day "Whole Family Approach to Domestic Abuse" training.

Well-being
Mindfulness for Resilience and Wellbeing (Virtual)
This live interactive virtual mindfulness programme offers an opportunity to learn a range of mindfulness skills to help equip you to thrive in busy and challenging work settings. This course has been evaluated independently and shown to have positive benefits in terms of reductions in stress and improved psychological wellbeing. Other identified benefits included increased compassion and a possible reduction in compassion fatigue; this has clear implications for the quality of relationships with service users.
The course is based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Programme (MBSR) and includes aspects of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). It includes an orientation session on the first day, then 8 weekly sessions and a retreat day on a Saturday. The course also involves 30-40 minutes of home practice a day including meditation and other exercises. This is an important part of the programme.
The course is entirely secular and contains no religious content. It is an experiential course to support wellbeing and is not training in teaching mindfulness skills to service users. Saturday retreat: You will be offered space and guidance to deepen and refresh your mindfulness practice. The session includes guided meditations like the body scan, mindful walking, movement, sitting meditation and compassion-based practices. Most of this session is spent in silence with guided meditation and movement throughout. Participants are invited to bring a packed lunch and remain in the retreat space for the whole session.
There will be an opportunity to talk to the trainer and ask any questions as part of the application process.
Additional Information
Participants are expected to complete daily home practice and are strongly encouraged to attend the scheduled Saturday retreat session, though this is optional. Taking this course involves a significant time commitment and it is worth ensuring you have the time available before you decide to enrol.
You will be provided with audio resources (online and CD are available) to support your practice. Managers of delegates attending the course will be sent an introductory video. Important note: The trainer will contact participants in advance of the course as part of the application process and will provide joining instructions and links to the online platform, which is Zoom. Therefore, the email address provided on the booking form will be shared with the trainer for the purposes of conducting this training only.

Mindfulness for Social Work (Virtual)
This 6-week programme provides an introduction to Mindfulness for case-holding practitioners, including social workers and keyworkers who need to make home visits. It will enable you to both learn how mindfulness may support your work with children, young people and families and to try out daily mindfulness practice as a 6-week experiment.
The course consists of live hour-long weekly teaching sessions using Microsoft Teams plus self-guided learning activities using a multi-media course website. Daily home mindfulness practice is a core part of the course and you will be asked to schedule in 2 x 10 minute daily guided mindfulness practices (at a time that suits you) for the duration of the 6 week programme. There are three short reflective assignments within the course but this is primarily an experiential programme which will enable you to explore for yourself whether practising mindfulness is something you would like to pursue beyond this introductory programme.
Additional Information
The trainer will contact participants in advance of the course as part of the application process. Mindfulness is something to be practiced rather than understood through the 'thinking mind' and it is vital that you are able to commit to the 20 minutes home meditation practice for a minimum of 5 days a week.
Mindfulness practice involves intentionally noticing our own thoughts, feelings and sensations we feel in the body much more than we do ordinarily. If you are currently experiencing major life events such as bereavement or serious illness, this course is not suitable. Please discuss this course information in supervision if you are not sure and/or consider picking up your interest in mindfulness another time.
