Early years foundation stage - schools

Central EYFS Moderation Discussions 2024

This is an opportunity to meet with colleagues to discuss evidence and make judgements against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) in order to complete the EYFS profile. There will be time for delegates to discuss their anecdotal evidence, and any recorded evidence with colleagues and moderators to gain confidence in securing accurate judgements. Year 1 colleagues are welcome to attend, alongside their EYFS colleagues to ensure that they gain an understanding of children's attainment at the end of the reception year.

Preparation and Follow Up

Please ensure that you are prepared to discuss a child/children for each area of learning and ELG. Please bring 'evidence' for children; this should include those working at emerging and/or ELG as well as those that are more difficult to assess. A template moderation document will be sent with your confirmation of booking. Please complete the document prior to the moderation session to identify the children that you would like to discuss.

Please bring with you

  • EYFS Profile Handbook 2023
  • Evidence (anecdotal and recorded) for a selection of children in your class
  • Moderation document with children to moderate

Continuity Counts: Making the move to Yr 1 a positive, playful and challenging experience for all

We are delighted that Kym Scott is going to lead this exciting training opportunity. Kym has worked in East Sussex previously with both teachers and headteachers and is a national and international speaker, passionate about early years and KS1 practice and pedagogy. This 2 part course is aimed at headteachers and Year 1 teachers, who wish to provide a more impactful, engaging and joyful educational experience for children, by using play and play-based experiences as a vehicle for learning.

The overall focus will be on providing both continuity and progression in learning between YR and Yr 1 in order to maximise outcomes for children. Both sessions will look at how to plan for and provide impactful experiences that support curriculum content as well as 21st century skills.

This course is aimed at both headteachers and Year 1 teachers attending day 1 together in order to facilitate changes in practice. Teachers will pay £90 for each day and headteachers can then attend for £25 for the day. (Headteachers can attend day 1 only or attend both days.)

Day 1 Content:

  • Transitioning into Year 1 - how to make this as smooth as possible
  • Key areas for consideration when moving to a more playful approach in Y1
  • How play and engaging adult led experiences can make learning more memorable and the science behind this.
  • Free play and play-based learning - why they matter and what they look like in practice.
  • Continuum from adult-directed to child initiated learning - where does your practice sit and where would you like to move to?
  • Creating a learning environment that provides challenging play opportunities.
  • The adult role in extending play in Yr 1 through quality interactions.
  • Gap Task: Putting into practice key elements and reporting back.

Day 2 Content:

  • Addressing issues that have arisen since Day 1 and sharing progress
  • Curriculum focus - playful writing in Year 1
  • Capturing and evidencing learning in play
  • Structuring opportunities so that curriculum objectives are covered - introducing challenges
  • Supporting learners who are at earlier stages of development
  • Moving forward into more structure without losing engagement.

Training objectives

  • To enable staff to consider ways to make transition to Year 1 as smooth as possible.
  • To understand how a more playful approach can make learning more memorable.
  • To explore the difference between free play and play-based learning.
  • To be confident in structuring playful learning opportunities.
