Course description For staff working in a care environment/assessment role, who move objects, not clients, e.g office staff.   The course covers: 
  • Basic awareness of employer/employees requirements under health and safety legislation, and how this should be put into practice 
  • The practice of all elements of anatomy of the spine, how the body works and protecting your back when moving objects. 
Training objectives An overview of: 
  • Health and Safety legislation, our duties and those of our managers 
  • Basic awareness of the anatomy, the spine and safe lifting principles 
  • Practical element of the base lift - candidates won’t lift anything above 10kg 
  • Techniques to lift, lower, push, pull and sweeping/mopping. 
Learning outcomes Understand: 
  • Legislation relating to moving and handling of objects 
  • Principles of good posture when undertaking manual handling techniques 
  • How posture relates to lifting, lowering, pushing and pulling 
  • Muscular skeletal injuries that can occur from unsafe practices.

Training objectives To provide knowledge, skills and confidence to train others.  Course covers: 
  • Legislation affecting manual handling of people, anatomy of the spine, how to reduce risk of injury

  • Learning styles and principles to become an effective teacher.

Course description The course is recommended 2 years after candidates have complete the 4 day Moving and Handling Train the Trainer course. This course will provide updated knowledge, skills and confidence to train others and in conducting individual, balanced Moving and Handling Risk Assessments.  The course allows candidates an opportunity to reflect on their training since attending the 4 day course. 
Training objectives The course aims to update candidates in: 
  • Changes to legislation affecting manual handling of people, anatomy of the spine and how to reduce the risk of spinal injury including Biomechanics principles 
  • Importance of individual client centred risk assessments, how to complete them and moving and handling plans 
  • Practical element will review a range of manoeuvres, techniques and equipment including assisted standing equipment, hoists, and slide sheets. 
Learning outcomes  * Update knowledge of legislation * Be confident in using and training staff in a wide range of equipment and techniques  *Be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of up-to-date practical skills in the moving and handling of adults in a care setting * Be able to undertake a moving and handling risk assessment.

Course description For staff who complete individual Moving and Handling risk assessments and plans for adults. The course does not cover generic moving and handling risk assessments of objects.  Staff should not have attended the ESCC 4 day Moving and Handling Train the Trainer, as that course covers Moving and Handling Risk Assessment. 
 
There will be some case scenarios to work through. 
Training objectives Provide knowledge and confidence to complete balanced, person-centred risk assessments, demonstrating clear reasoning of the risks and how and why decisions have been reached to reduce them.   Candidates will be able to detail risks/hazards, consider clients' human rights and evidence their reasoning. 
Learning outcomes
  • Increase knowledge of legislation affecting moving and handling 
  • Be able to complete a personalised, balanced, holistic and concise risk assessment 
  • Be able to complete a person centred concise manual handling plan.

Subject Moving and Handling 
Course description This course provides delegates with both theory and practical knowledge of their legal responsibilities, safe techniques and equipment that they may need to use to move and assist a client. It does not cover clients who need hoisting or are cared for in bed.
Training objectives To provide care givers with:
  • safe moving techniques to protect themselves and the adult they are caring for
  • Practical demonstrations of how to use equipment safely and appropriately, including stand aids, handling belts, leg lifters etc
Learning outcomes
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety, and care legislation 
  • Knowledge of equipment for the ambulant client
  • Understand the anatomy of the spine and how to reduce the risk of back injury
  • Understand the importance of good sitting posture.
Additional information This course replaces the foundation part 1 via TEAMS and part 2 face to face and combines the 2 courses together. Due to the practical nature of the course, candidates must be fit, appropriately dressed and wear closed in shoes.

Course description The course will cover both theory and practical elements of:    Caring for and assisting clients with restricted mobility. We will refresh knowledge on Legislation, including LOLER requirements, risk assessments, sling selection,  safely fitting slings, best practice techniques when hoisting clients .  The use of stand aids, dressing aids.
Training objectives To provide care givers with:
  • Safe techniques to protect their backs and the adult they are caring for  
  • Knowledge of the additional challenges faced by those who are immobile and unable to reposition themselves
  • Knowledge of equipment and slide sheet techniques 
  • Understanding of the concepts of a balanced risk assessment approach. 
Learning outcomes
  • Understand the needs of clients with limited mobility  
  • Awareness of equipment that can be used to move clients 
  • Knowledge of slings and when to fit and use them 
  • Knowledge of unsafe practices and understand why and what injury may occur.

  • Anatomy of pelvis and spine 
  • Effects of immobility on the body, in relation to posture, tissue viability, circulation 
  • Awareness of postural issues and how to correct/support them 
  • Importance of ensuring clients sit in a functional postural position and are repositioned appropriately 
  • Appropriate hoisting techniques into a chair 
  • Ensuring the client's seat is the correct size suitable. 
Training objectives To understand the principles and merits of good seating posture, how to ensure someone is sitting in the best position and how to ensure adequate repositioning. 
Learning outcomes
  • Clients are seated in the most appropriate position 
  • Understand risk factors to posture, seating, tissue viability and their potential impact on an adult’s function and wellbeing

Course description This half day course practical course is aimed at Occupational Therapists within Adult Social Care and Housing, who assess and work with adults who require hoisting.  This is a hands-on session, looking at all aspects required in assessing for and prescribing full lifting slings. It therefore covers the variety of stock slings, pros and cons of various slings and sizing, alternative slings and their potential application for clients.  The session allows candidates to practice a variety of techniques to use slide sheets to assist in fitting a sling correctly. 
Training objectives To provide practical experience for Occupational Therapists to aid them in completing Moving and Handling Sling Assessments and be familiar with the variety of styles and uses of slings. 
Learning outcomes By the end of this session, candidates will: 
  • Have a good working knowledge of a range of slings, feel confident measuring them and fitting them. 
  • Feel confident in demonstrating the use of slide sheets to carers.
