Course description | Four day moving and handling and risk assessment (people not loads) Train the Trainer course. Check dates for delivery method/venue. Day 1 - Theory, legislation, effective teaching, safe lifting principles, biomechanics, posture and seating. Day 2 - Equipment familiarisation and techniques Day 3 - Risk assessment theory and practical> Hoisting and slide sheets. Day 4 - Equipment and techniques, test and presentations. |
Training objectives | To provide knowledge, skills and confidence to train others in the moving and handling of people, and in conducting individual, balanced moving and handling risk assessments. The course requires candidates to complete a risk assessment, deliver a presentation and pass a written test. |
Learning outcomes |
Knowledge of legislation and how it affects employer, employee and client. Confidence using/training staff in manual handling equipment and explaining its use in the safer moving and handling of people. Demonstrate practical skills in the moving and handling of adults in a care setting. Undertake a risk assessment. Be able to risk assess unsafe practices and understand/be able to teach injury risks. Demonstrate skills and confidence to convey knowledge and skills to others. |
Additional information | For the practical element participants attending should be fit, dressed appropriately and able to fully participate. Footwear should be flat/ low heel and closed in toes. No flipflops or open toe sandals . |

For staff who complete individual Moving and Handling risk assessments and plans for adults. The course does not cover generic moving and handling risk assessments of objects.
Staff should not have attended the ESCC 4 day Moving and Handling Train the Trainer, as that course covers Moving and Handling Risk Assessment. There will be some case scenarios to work through. |
Training objectives | Provide knowledge and confidence to complete balanced, person-centred risk assessments, demonstrating clear reasoning of the risks and how and why decisions have been reached to reduce them. Candidates will be able to detail risks/hazards, consider clients' human rights and evidence their reasoning. |

Course description | This half day course practical course is aimed at Occupational Therapists within Adult Social Care and Housing, who assess and work with adults who require hoisting. This is a hands-on session, looking at all aspects required in assessing for and prescribing full lifting slings. It therefore covers the variety of stock slings, pros and cons of various slings and sizing, alternative slings and their potential application for clients. The session allows candidates to practice a variety of techniques to use slide sheets to assist in fitting a sling correctly. |
