Solar Together is a group buying scheme to enable residents to buy solar PV panels for their roof at a lower rate than if you buy them on your own. An average solar PV system can reduce annual household carbon emissions by approximately one tonne each year, helping East Sussex on its way to become carbon neutral.
Over the last 3 years, over 1,700 homes across Sussex have benefitted from Solar Together, 550 of which were in East Sussex.

The Low Carbon Across the South and East (LoCASE) programme provided free support to businesses to identify how best to cut carbon emissions and energy bills, and awarded grants of up to £10,000 to implement measures.
LoCASE helped over 2,000 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across the region and allocated about £7million of grants.
Southdown sports club in Lewes is an example of a business that has benefitted from the LoCASE scheme. An energy efficiency audit was conducted to determine how the club could reduce its electricity consumption, lowering its carbon footprint and on-going running costs.
Based on the findings of the audit, Southdown decided to use LoCASE grant funding to replace their hockey pitch’s floodlights with new LED models. The LED floodlights cost a total of £26,200, but cut their electricity costs by £10,000 a year and cut their carbon dioxide emissions by 27 tonnes a year.
LoCASE is currently closed for new applications.
ESCC’s first two school heat decarbonisation projects were completed in November 2022 and January 2023. These projects have involved greatly improving building insulation and replacing fossil fuel boilers with air source heat pumps. Six more school decarbonisations are in the pipeline.
During 2022, ESCC kicked off its energy saving workshops for school site managers, with successful pilot workshops on 15th November attended by school site managers and caretakers. More are planned in early 2023. The workshops cover practical advice on energy costs, climate change & carbon, energy efficiency measures and virtual site audits. A local school case study is used to show how changes that site managers can implement can result in emissions and cost savings.
ESCC is aiming to embed net zero throughout the whole organisation, from policy and decision-making, to staff travel, project management and building user behaviour. Engagement and training are essential for all council staff, in order to achieve the behavioural change needed to meet net zero targets.
A programme of engagement and training has been launched to offer a wide range of training and engagement opportunities to staff, from face-to-face carbon awareness workshops to a bespoke e-module for East Sussex staff which has become mandatory for all new starters.
So far over 170 staff members, and 26 elected members have been trained.
The course was very informative and made me more aware of the urgent issues that we face with climate change, to make changes both at work and in home life.
