Your legal responsibilities

Attending school – what parents and carers need to know about early years providers, schools and colleges as COVID-19 becomes a virus that we learn to live with – GOV.UK

By law, all children between 5 and 16 must receive a full time education. Parents must make sure this happens, either:

  • at school,
  • through alternative provision, or
  • a suitable full time home education.

The Education Support, Behaviour and Attendance Service (ESBAS) can give you advice and support.

If you do not ensure your child receives education, we may take legal action. For example we may issue a penalty notice.
