County Groups Information

County Groups Information

We run a range of county-wide ensembles to provide exceptional experiences for pupils playing at advanced levels on their instrument. Players are typically of grade 6 standard and above, but the entry requirements for each group are slightly different.

Please read below for general information and click the links above for details and entry requirements for each group.

What are the County Groups?

The County Groups offer students the highest level of performing opportunities with East Sussex Music, with performances at prestigious venues at home and abroad. County Groups have performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall in London as well as large venues in East Sussex. Recent tours have included France, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Finland.

When do courses take place?

All groups meet for week-long (or longer) courses during our Summer School in July. Some groups also have day-long weekend courses during term time.

Are there any costs involved?

There is a charge for each individual course. Players from low income families can get assistance with fees as per our usual criteria. Residential courses and tours will involve additional fees which do not always attract our usual fee reductions for low income families, though we do everything we can to make sure everyone can take part, regardless of their circumstances.

Members usually attend every course however it is not essential so you are not entering into a long term financial commitment. You may lose your place to another player if you do not keep up your membership.

Who can apply for membership?

Details are included in the information about each group below.

How and when can I apply?

You should apply online here. You can apply at any time, but auditions are only held occasionally during the year.

Do I have to audition?

Entry is by audition for the East Sussex Youth Orchestra. Other county groups operate differently – please see details below.
