Registering a birth

Our register offices are closed for appointments on bank holidays including Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Normal opening hours resume on Tuesday 23 April.

Booked ceremonies are not affected by this.

All births must be registered within 42 days.

Book Online

Book Online or call 0345 60 80 198 for an appointment at an East Sussex register office.

How much does it cost?

Registration is free.

Birth certificates cost £11 each. Birth certificates are required for passport applications, opening bank accounts and applying for child benefit and tax credits etc.

We also stock a range of commemorative items and can provide Naming and Welcoming Ceremonies at a venue of your choice to mark the safe arrival of your little one.

Who can register?

If the parents are married to each other, the mother or father can register.

If the parents are unmarried, the father can only be included on the registration if he accompanies the mother to register.

Further help and guidance can be found at a birth.

How do I register?

You do not need to bring your baby with you when you register. The registrar will already have been informed of the birth by the NHS.

The registrar will ask you;

  • When was the birth
  • Where did it happen
  • The full names of the parents
  • Dates and places of birth of the parents
  • The occupations of the parents

It is helpful, if you could bring supporting documentation with you (e.g. passport, driving licence, utility bill, birth and marriage certificates) although we can register without them.

You MUST check the entry carefully before signing, a correction to a birth register entry will cost up to £90 plus the cost of replacement certificates

Babies born outside of East Sussex

Births should be registered in the district where they took place.

If you cannot travel, you can register by declaration in East Sussex by calling 0345 60 80 198, but this will delay the process and you may not receive your certificates for several days.

If you are the natural parents of a child and have got married since its birth, or if you wish to add the name of the father onto the birth certificate, then you will need to re-register the birth.
