Giving back to the community

Community service

When a court gives a young person a sentence they can choose from several options.

A typical sentence for a young offender is a ‘community order’.

All community orders should include an element of reparation. Reparation makes a young person give something back to the community.

The East Sussex Youth Offending team manages this work which includes:

  • upkeep of public parks, gardens and school grounds, painting park benches and clearing litter
  • refurbishing youth and sports club buildings
  • charity bag drops
  • preparing clothes and making bird boxes for charity shops

Restorative justice

A victim can ask for direct reparation from the offender. The Restorative Justice coordinator talks to the victim to find out what they expect and decide whether it’s achievable.

The Youth Offending Team can talk to you about this.
