Open Doors

Open Doors is a project run by the East Sussex Careers Hub enabling school pupils across East Sussex to visit workplaces and hear from employers about the range of jobs on offer, and the career paths into them.

This project gives pupils essential knowledge and experience to shape their own futures and provides employers with the opportunity to engage with young people who could form their future workforce.

Since Open Doors started in 2016, over 3,000 students have visited over 80 businesses from Brighton to Dungeness, learning about a diverse range of East Sussex based jobs including,

  • web design
  • event management
  • engineering
  • construction
  • care
  • hospitality
  • and many more.

Students' feedback is very positive, with all participants saying that they had learnt about new roles, and that the experience would help inform their future learning and career decisions. Some employers even identified members of their future workforce from the visits with companies signing up visiting students as future apprentices!

Visits take place during school hours, but schools and employers can choose together the days, times, and how many students can be accommodated. The visit only has to last an hour, although some companies set aside a day or a week and host multiple visits.

Visits to premises are due to start again in November 2021, and we would like to invite more businesses to open their doors to young people from across East Sussex.

If Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions prevent visits to an employer’s premises there is 'Digital Open Doors'. This involves one member of the Careers Hub visiting for about an hour to film the workplace and team, and from this create a 15 minute video featuring jobs and careers with that employer. Watch one example featuring Metro Bank.

If employers are interested in opening their doors to young people to shape their futures, please contact the Open Doors team.
