Business, employment and coronavirus
National advice on loans, grants, furlough and which businesses can reopen and how. Also details of local support from the Business East Sussex Growth Hub.

The Task Group includes representatives from local employers GM Monk Ltd, Hailsham Roadways Construction Co. Ltd, Hawes Building Contractors, Cheesmur Building Contractors Ltd and East Sussex Highways. National construction employers such as Volker Fitzpatrick, BAM Nuttall and Morgan Sindall and others are also members, especially when they have building contracts in the East Sussex area. The group also has representation from education and training including the East Sussex College Group, the Construction Industry Training Board and representation from the employment and skills departments of the local authorities including Eastbourne and Lewes, and East Sussex County Council. The Task Group is jointly chaired by Scott Monk of GM Monk Ltd and Dan Shelley of East Sussex College Group.

Task Group achievements to date

  • Endorsement of a University of Brighton bid to secure £100K to develop degree level construction apprenticeships
  • Endorsement of an East Sussex College bid to the Construction Industry Training Board for the mobile Construction Hub to enable more flexible training and delivery
  • Input in to the curriculum, including the new T-Levels at East Sussex College Group (ESCG)
  • The driver for two projects through the Sussex Council of Training Providers supporting engagement between business and education to inform co-design of the curriculum and recruitment of tutors from industry
  • Support from the construction sector at the first East Sussex Apprenticeship Graduation ceremony in 2019. Support for the Primary and Secondary Careers Hubs, with a number of members promoting the sector through the Enterprise Adviser Network, Industry Champions and Open Doors workplace visit programme.

Co-Chair Scott Monk, Dierctor of GM Monk Ltd

For Scott Co-Chairing the Construction Task Group allows him to use his knowledge and expertise from both the education, construction and careers sector to assist and direct the group towards some of the key objectives that East Sussex County Council have set in relation to employment, education and the construction industry. He chairs a very positive and engaged group of people which allows the Task Group to tackle some of the limiting factors in construction.

Dan has worked in education, social and economic regeneration in the Sussex area for over 15 years. Dan leads on apprenticeships, Higher Education, marketing and communications, external partnerships and relationships and international business for the East Sussex College Group. Dan co-chairs the engineering and construction sub-groups to ensure there are better links between employer and educators to drive economic growth and productivity in these key sectors. In his spare time Dan enjoys spending time with his family, running and is a long suffering Derby County FC fan.

Task Group Priorities for 2020

As well as continued promotion of the sector to young people through the Careers Hub, the task group is focused on 3 key priorities this year:

  • Ensuring the relevance of further and higher education curriculum for Construction
  • Helping employers overcome barriers to recruiting employees/apprentices
  • Supporting employment and skills through Social Value in Construction contracts procured by Local Authorities

The Task Group will also be supporting the All-Age Careers Campaign across Sussex in 2020–21 to promote the industry to adults,particularly roles where there are critical employment and skills shortages:

  • Site and Project Manager
  • Skilled trades – Carpenter, Plumber and Electrician
  • Civil Engineer
